Though there's no fact in it and no proof I checked this DVD out from the library earlier this afternoon...

    Paul McCartney Really Is Dead

I remember when that rumor went around back in 1969, but died out pretty quick. I beleive it to be easier to fake the voice of a famous person than it is to create a likeness on a surgeon's table. And we know the one who really is dead is George Harrison.

Wasn't there a rumor that you could hear "Paul is Dead" in a song if you played it backwards?

There are suppose to be several such messages in their songs when played backwards.

What I don't understand is if they wanted to keep his supposed death a big secret then why were they leaving all these clues? I just wonder if The Beatles or Paul McCartney himself got this started as a prank just to see how far it would go.

Yeah, its urban legend and the primary album that was supposed to have clues was Abbey Road because it was a "funeral procession" on the cover and Paul was the only one of the four who was barefooted.
I'm guessing it was absolute marketing genius.

And so did the other albums following the time of the "alleged" death in a car crash - Revolver, Sargent Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, the white album.
