Brandon Chillar

Thick deal for a possible backup.. 2 years 5 plus million.. but that should hush the people that want some activity..

it does sound a little much at first but if you really think about it.

2.6 million dollars per year for a starting NFL linebacker is a steal. he was the starter in St. Louis. and he will have the opportunity to be a starter here.

depth and competition, it does a body good.

He could beat out Brady Poppinga, or just back him up.

This move will only make our D stronger.

I like it.

Re: Brandon Chillar

Now we will see some great competition at a starting position between Poppinga and Chillar. I like Chillar and I am looking forward to see what he can do as a Packer.

I agree Trippster!!!
I think adding Chillar could heat up competition, which is GOOD!
Besides........what a great name for a cold Green Bay player CHILLar!

I feel a Michael Jackson song coming on.......
"For this is Chillar, Chillar night! Better watch out now you Bears fans cause he'll put out your QB's lights!"

I'm hearing Poppinga will be backing him up.

from whom? I mean, that's what I think will happen, obviously, but it would be nice to hear who is saying that.

Chillar takes Packers' offer
By Tom Silverstein

The Green Bay Packers are on the free agent scoreboard.

They have agreed to terms with St. Louis linebacker Brandon Chillar on a two-year, $5.2 million contract, according to a source close to the negotiations. The Packers have not announced the deal.

The 6-3, 242-pound Chillar, who some scouts think headed the second tier of free agent linebackers behind Chicago's Lance Briggs and Arizona's Calvin Pace, had 85 tackles, 2 ½ sacks, four passes defensed and three forced fumbles in 15 games - 14 of them starts - with the Rams last year.

Chillar, 25, fits what the Packers seek in a strong-side linebacker. He has size and explosiveness for playing the run and decent short-area speed for covering tight ends. He is not a top-notch cover man and didn't play in the Rams' nickel package last year, but he has the ability to line up over the tight end and affect his release.

His signing creates competition at the strong-side linebacker spot, but also allows the Packers to use both he and Poppinga in various roles. He will compete with Poppinga for the starting job, but the Packers have the option of using Poppinga as a pass rusher, a role they have experimented with from time to time in the past.

That'd be sweet, imo. Give Kampy some plays here and there to breathe, and Jenkins some competition, too!!

Chillar received a hard sell from the Rams the last couple days, but he ultimately decided his future was best served in Green Bay. The Arizona Cardinals were also heavily pursuing Chillar and were thought to be offering more money.

Yeah, FA's prefer successful franchises over the Crapinals. :D GO TT!! WOO!!

The Packers remain committed to Poppinga and have engaged in preliminary talks about a contract extension. If he loses his job to Chillar he would still be a vital part of the special teams and a potential pass rush specialist. Poppinga was a defensive end for most of his stay at BYU and has some pass-rush ability.

In addition to Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Poppinga and Chillar, the Packers have at linebacker Tracy White, Desmond Bishop and Abdul Hodge, the latter of whom has made some strides in his recovery from surgery on both knees.

IMO, our D just went up a notch. Yes, a whole notch!!

I like the move, as others above have said this creates competition, and either Popp or Chillar will be a good option for us.

I wouldn't say that yet, but I think this move has the potential to take our D up another notch.

If Chillar or Poppinga (through competition that will now be fierce) become above average in covering TEs then this move will help our D in many ways.

"I think ultimately at the end of the day he could have had the ability to get more money elsewhere," Ivler said. "But he was comfortable with what Green Bay had to say and he realizes it's a winning program and a great organization and he wants a chance at the Super Bowl.

"I think that of all the teams that were talking to him when we got down to the nitty gritty, the Packers have the best shot at that. He wants to be on a competitive, winning team. That was absolutely a big thing."

Love it.

Thanks PIB. I like seeing a more dynamic D, one that has more situational roles used. This should be interesting in '08. One problem I had with our D is when we played top tier teams, we had problems putting pressure on opposing QBs. I hate seeing opposing QBs having too much time to throw.

Poppinga was a liability in TE coverage, so hopefully Chillar could help there. Would be awesome to see 2 pass rush specialists. I wasn't crazy about Kampman getting 94% of snaps at his position. He seemed to wear down later on in the season.

The details of the contract haven't been release. A lot of the money could be due next year and that would create the option for the Packers to cut him.

I do like the move because the Packers now have an interesting camp battle between Poppinga and Chillar. Really the Packers are now 5 deep at linebacker with Hawk, Barnett, Poppinga, Chillar, and Bishop.

I actually read some crap on another site about how TT isn't spending money. A pretty big article posted by somebody. I'm sure those who saw it will know what I'm talking about. Anyway the article kind of went out of it's way to mention guys like Brandon Chillar and Kris Wilson. Well one down.

Some more details on the contract:

The two-year deal Chillar signed was worth $5.4 million, according to (Chillar's agent) Ivler, and consists of another $1 million in incentives and escalators. Ivler said that before the first year of the contract is over, Chillar will have earned $3 million in base salary and incentives.

Swarmin' Mormon vs. The Pillar of Chillar

That's going to be a great battle to keep track of during training camp and pre-season.

Is that 3 FA signings and a re-signing this year so far?

This offseason is going well so far.
