This year's 5th year option prices for DE/OLB were $14.75mil & $19.87mil, but at 40% snap count LVN would be approx. $13.5mil if eligible this year. LVN needs to perform much better in '25 to get 5th year tagged. He'd probably need over 75% snap count, also, to get over 50% (over 3 years) & a jump up in pay level.
Yeah good point. He has to have a very good year. I hope the second year in Hafley's system, and coaching/play calling that gets to his strengths will help him. We have acknowledged he doesn't have much bend. Fine - then design plays for the strong athlete he is. And hey, it takes guys 3 years sometimes to master the speed and intricacies of the NFL.

And he's on our team. So go have a helluva year LVN.

Which our system just won't deploy...shoot Gary didn't even play 60% of the snaps last year.

That might be a chicken or egg issue though. Did nobody play a ton of snaps because nobody on the line was playing well? If all your players are playing poorly, then at the very least, try and make sure they're well-rested while playing poorly?

Preston has really been the only edge used at a high snap rate last five years. Gary only has touched 70 percent once

Then it sounds more like a player issue and not a scheme issue, no? Gute has invested a LOT of draft capital in the dline and this team isn’t going to reach a Super Bowl until those players start proving they weren’t wasted picks or seriously over drafted.

I was speaking to edge specifically and not DL. Which to be fair is a position where not a ton of guys in the league play 70 percent or more of the snaps.

Demarcus Covington paired with Jeff Hafley is a pretty formidable pair. What I like about Covington is he brings a similar experience level from top notch 4-3 Defenses. Both Demarcus Covington and Jason Rebrovich served extensively with The Patriots and Jason with The Bills. Teams associated with tough Defenses over their tenures. Also both are no strangers to playing in cold weather.

Thirdly, Covington has experience at both OLB and DL and served under Belichick. Covington was closely intertwined as a student of Brian Flores and Matt Patricia. As OLB Coach Demarcus was part of a 2019 Defense who finished
#7 Sacks (tied)
#1 (2nd half pts avg. 6.06 pts)
#1 yards per play (tied 4.7)
#1 (276yds/gm)
#1 Rush TD (tied Pittsburgh 7TD)
#4 Red Zone TD %
#2 Turnovers (38)
#1 Red Zone TDs (14)
#1 Points allowed (14.06 pts allowed)

Now this doesn’t imply he’s automatically going to finish there. Yet he’s been part of that level defensive unit. Stifling levels. My hope is he’s able to put some of our players in better positions to succeed.

Speaking of which, Colby Wooden is supposedly at 290lb and gaining. He has been lining up at NT.
I guess this is a crowded DL room.
It’s possible his best chance at making this Roster is reducing inside or battling at iDL

I believe Wooden played at 290 in '24 & has gained more this offseason. Hoping he's at 315 or 320 now & shows well inside. Clark can't last battling double teams all season, so need Wooden or Stackhouse to do some dirty eork over center.

Apparently Hafely likes what he sees in Van Ness on the field during OTAs. The impression I have is that he offers an option, that they can disguise defenses and move him into a hands down position, or play straight up as a backer. His speed gives them that option.

I had a feeling that Hafely would find a solid use for him. The guy has too much talent to spend 70% of the defensive plays on the sideline. I believe that the coaching staff foresaw this to a great degree prior to the draft and therefore felt less of a need to beef up that department.

If this experiment works, the defensive line will take a huge step forward.

Interesting. I didn't realize that the D subbed that much. I would have guessed Gary played 75-80% of the snaps.

Thanks for the history on Covington. Impressive pedigree.

Maybe I read an old story? but I thought they mentioned Stackhouse competing so couldn’t have been.
That reporter said he had been like 275lb and now he’s 290lb-ish a these were coming from an interview with Kenny Clark that they had played Wooden over Center more. My impression was they thought he’d have a better chance at a Roster spot if he clipped 300+ and moved inside.

My personal feeling is Wooden is on the bubble because he’s somewhat redundant. Not saying he’s necessarily bad but he doesn’t jump off the page and the DL room is full right now. Similar to what’s going on at WR depth it’s going to be a battle and a good player likely gets cut.

Unless the DL is radically different from last year, so far it's not, it's hard to make a case for cutting a player who has at least held his own. Let him win or lose in camp and PS. One thing is certain - Hafley needs a lot more out of the DL than he got last year.

I read in the JS that Clark played all of last season with a painful bunion. That's easily fixed with surgery, and the recovery is about 6 to 8 weeks (I think). Clearly he thought he could play through it. I've had that, and it is very painful just to put on a pair of shoes.

There it is I stand corrected.
I thought it said he was up from 273 last year, 2024. That was his Rookie season weight.
That said give me the best 2 players between Him, Stack and Brinson.
