Packers re-sign Steele; safety Freeman to visit

The Green Bay Packers will have at least two of their tight ends from last season back in training camp this summer after backup Ben Steele was re-signed on Monday.

Steele, who spent the first week of the 2004 season on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster on Sept. 15, was an exclusive rights free agent, meaning it was a foregone conclusion he would return to the Packers.

In 15 regular-season games last year, Steele caught four passes for 42 yards but probably had more value as a special teams player. He recovered a fumble late in the Nov. 14 game against Minnesota that helped set up the game-winning field goal.

The Packers last month re-signed fellow backup tight end David Martin, assuring that the top two backups to Bubba Franks would be back to compete for roster spots in 2005.

Steele was the No. 3 tight end behind Franks and Martin, then became the primary backup after Martin

Freeman would be a good pickup I believe. He knows Bates system, has some ability, and we need some veteran experience at safety.
