Of course the window could be now. Packer and Seattle wins on Sunday earn two home playoff games on the way to the big show. That's plausible, though the idea of Seattle bringing back Lynch for anything other than inspiration is a dubious proposition. However, stranger things have happened. Anyway, it is hard enough looking 1+ seasons down the road. 2, 3, 4 seasons has many unknowns under ordinary circustances. In this case there's also the matter of the CBA expiring after 2020. That said, here's what we do know. 2020 Bulaga and Martinez are the free agents of note after 2020. Martinez has been subjected to a lot of criticism this season, deservedly so, but suddenly over these past few weeks he's played his best football as a Packer to my eye. In any case, these are two positions that need to be addressed one way or the other. To lesser extent, Tramon Williams (who's having a good year under the radar covering the slot) and Crosby will also be free agents. I'd like to see these guys re-signed which would not be particularly expensive. From a free agent standpoint, this is about as manageable as any team can expect. On the plus side, Savage and Jenkins will be in year 2 with upside, Gary has shown flashes and will develop further with potential big upside. Sternberger amounts to an extra 2020 3rd. round pick after what amounts to a redshirt year. The cap hits for the 2019 FA class cap will not peak until 2021. Kenny "Mr. December" Clark is sitting on a $7.7 mil 5th. year option for 2020. We should expect he'll be extended sometime between today and the draft. A long term deal with a big signing bonus means his cap number for 2020 will likely not go up. 2021 The 2021 free agents include Bakhtiari, Linsley, Jones, Jamaal Williams and King. That's a substantive group, more so than for 2020. Rodgers cap number will jump from $21.2 mil in 2020 to $36.4 mil in 2021. The cap numbers for the big four 2019 free agent signings will go from $23.4 mil in 2019 to $47.8 mil in 2020 to $55.0 mil in 2021. The 2nd. and 3rd. year jumps in thos contracts look less manageable in 2021 than 2020 given that collection of 2021 free agents. Clark wil be in the second year of the presumed extension where the cap bite comes into play with a backloaded contract as evidenced by the 2019-to-2020 jumps we see with the 2019 free agents. Conclusion Knowing what we know now, 2020 looks pretty promising if Gutekunst can stack a decent draft on top of what he has. The cap situation for 2021, pending the outcome of the CBA negotiation, looks less so.
