I'd take this guy as our punter today, if he were still in his 30s. And he'd be as good at receiver as anyone we've got.

If he's our punter for the opener in Jacksonville next week Jacob Schum will be the 12th man to punt in regular season for the Packers over the last 18 seasons. And that doesn't include the number brought in for try-outs or a cup of coffee over that period of time.

The Packers have managed to do the opposite with their punter of what they have with their quarterback position, which is probably better than vice versa. But the recent releases and switches of punters are part of a continuing pattern that has dogged Green Bay for more than a decade.

In a way it's been a continual ripple effect from the decision in 1998 to let Pro Bowler Craig Hentrich walk in free agency. https://dairylandexpress.com/2015/07/10/best-of-the-packers-top-10-kickers-punters-since-1960/3/ .

At first the Packers managed to cover that departure by signing free agent Sean Landeta, who punted for two New York Giants' Super Bowl Champions and is a Pro Football Hall of Fame worthy punter. http://www.25amagazine.com/index.php/profiles/celebrities/item/116-sean-landeta-on-his-career-the-nfl-hall-of-fame-and-what’s-next. But Landeta left after only one season in Green & Gold.

Next up in 1999, the Ray Rhodes' year, was Louie Aguiar, who only averaged 39.4 yds. and didn't make it to the final game of the season. That one was covered by one Chris Hanson, who averaged 39.3 yds. in the season finale. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louie_Aguiar.

The Packers seemed to have solved the instability of the punting position in 2000 with the drafting of Josh Bidwill. https://dairylandexpress.com/2015/07/10/best-of-the-packers-top-10-kickers-punters-since-1960/2/. But once again free agency would see another one leave.

Bryan Barker would do caretaker duty in 2004, averaging 40.1 yds.

Then in 2005 the Packers thought they were getting their Ray Guy, B.J. Sander. http://cover32.com/2014/05/01/remember-b-j-sander-he-was-the-worst-green-bay-packers-special-teamer-ever-selected/.

After bearing with Sander for 14 games Ray Flinn was brought in to finish the final two of the 4-12 year and managed to average 3 yds. less than Sander in those final two games.

In 2006 the punting problem seemed solved again with the coming of Jon Ryan. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RyanJo21.htm. Although Ryan struggled in some cold and windy winter conditions in 2007 there was little reason to expect him to be replaced when, just days before the 2008 season opener against Minnesota he was released and went to the Seattle Seahawks; where he's been doing just fine ever since. Even coming back to bite the Packers in the NFC Championship Game with a fake punt td pass that started turning a lost game back to the Seahawks.

Derrick Frost was a cut from Washington but somehow the Packers thought they were getting a better directional punter than Ryan. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/30/AR2008083002252.html. That move didn't work out so well either.

Jeremy Kapinos was the next guy off the street for Packer punting. He did last through 20 regular season games in 2008-09 and averaged 43.8 yds in his one full season in Green Bay before Tim Masthay came in and got the job in 2010. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Kapinos

Kapinos is currently an unsigned free agent so if another pick up from Washington fall through it may be deja vu all over again.
