I ranked the top players I think the Packers should draft. I am leaving out quarterbacks because we have Aaron Rodgers. Most of these players will not be available, but players do tend to drop in the draft, and hopefully a guy in this top ten will. It happened with Bulaga in 2010 when most people thought he would be a top 10 pick.

1. Matt Kalil
2. Melvin Ingram
3. Morris Claiborne
4. Trent Richardson
5. Justin Blackmon
6. Fletcher Cox
7. Luke Kuechly
8. Quinton Coples
9. Riley Reiff
10. Courtney Upshaw
11. Dre Kirkpatrick
12. Whitney Mercilus
13. Mark Barron
14. Nick Perry
15. Andre Branch
16. David DeCastro
17. Michael Floyd
18. Devon Still
19. Shea McClellin
20. Janoris Jenkins
21. Michael Brockers
22. Peter Konz

Obviously this isn't the list for the entire NFL. Tell me what you think of the list and if you agree or not. There are a lot of different opinions when it comes to these players so it will be interesting to see what everyone thinks.

You didn't even board to our pick, and I think Shea, while amazing, shouldn't be as high as #20, though I like him a whole lot more than Konz the clotting.

Well I took into account the three quarterbacks that are going to be taken. There are also players like Wright, Glenn, Hill, Hightower, Martin, among others that could be taken. I could have put those guys in there but they would have just been at the end of the list and we probably won't take them anyways.

I buy most of that, but I don't want a WR, and Floyd is a diva, so I don't want him. Plus he's not worthy of the #15 spot or the #18 spot, much less both spots.

I want one of the guys I bolded.

Did I really have Floyd up there twice? Wow, thanks for pointing that out. I agree with what you said about Floyd.. I think that Floyd is just a great talent and TT is known for taking the best player available. I felt like I had to put Floyd on there somewhere just because of his talent.

Stephon Gilmore? He's a player that fits the Packers well, and a player that could be there at #28.

No go players for Packers: Perry, Branch, Still, Floyd and Jenkins.

I don't understand all the "we don't want" Perry fuss. The guy runs sub 4.6, 35 bench reps, and is a great pass rusher... the dude can ball. I believe he'll be the best pass rusher in this class. He may have reached his physical potential, but his measurables are already that of an elite NFL pass rusher. His numbers are much better than McClellin's, and he played against better competition.

Top ten players Green Bay needs: Nick Perry, Luke Kuechly, Mark Barron, David DeCastro, Stephon Gilmore, Courtney Upshaw, Bruce Irvin, Shea McClellin, Michael Brockers. Some won't be there when they're ready to pick, but if they have to trade up 5 -7 spots for Perry they better pull the damn trigger.

I agree that Nick Perry is very good. He reminds me of Brian Orakpo. The second paragraph I have a problem with. Are you saying you would rather have Bruce Irvin, the potential fourth rounder, than Fletcher Cox? If you have Kuechly up there then why won't you have Fletcher Cox? You also don't have Whitney Mercilus up there which also confuses me. It just looks like you put up some of your favorite prospects of this year's class and said we better take one.

I am not against trading up. The Packers have 12 draft picks this year. We can trade some of our non-compensatory picks to trade up to get a stud like Melvin Ingram or whoever TT likes. Plus that would create a lot of buzz and hype. We don't have that many needs so we mine as well get a dominant player to help our team win. I don't agree with what the Falcons did last year with Julio Jones. Their team last year had many needs and could not afford to lose multiple first round draft picks and even second rounders. If a player like Melvin Ingram drops out of the top ten, we could definitely make a move because the pick wouldn't cost as much.

You're right. Gilmore is someone that the Pack could take at the 28th spot. However, He is nowhere near as talented as Janoris Jenkins. Could you elaborate on the players that are a no go? I understand Jenkins and Floyd because of character concerns, but why Perry, Branch, and Still?

No, those are just players I've targeted that would fit their scheme and fit a need. Mercilus is inconsistent and he isn't quick enough to be a starting OLB in a 3-4 scheme, only a pass rush specialist. Fletcher Cox is a 4-3 Defensive Tackle/inside rusher not a 3-4 DE or NT, so he would not fit their scheme. And yes I would rather have Irvin because he could at least fit into the scheme someday. Apart from Kuechly and Brockers those are all players they will have a shot at obtaining in the 1st, so no they aren't only my favorite players.

Here would be my actual big board list for Green Bay based on BPA, need, and depth of draft class.

1. Andrew Luck QB
2. RG3 QB
3. Matt Kalil OT
4. Trent Richardson RB
5. Justin Blackmon WR
6. Morris Claiborne CB
7. Quinton Coples DE
8. Michael Brockers DT/DE
9. Luke Keuchly LB
10. David Decastro OL
11. Mark Barron S
12. Dre Kirkpatrick CB
13. Melvin Ingram DE
14. Michael Floyd WR
15. Riley Reiff OT
16. Johnathon Martin OT
17. Janoris Jenkins CB
18. Courtney Upshaw DE/OLB
19. Dontari Poe DT
20. Nick Perry DE/OLB
21. Ryan Tannehill QB
22. Cordy Glenn OL
23. Stephon Gilmore CB
24. Mike Adams OL
25. Kendall Wright WR
26. Whitney Mercilus DE
27. Dont'a Hightower ILB

Like Perry said "I prefer to play with my hand in the dirt", i'm not saying he's not a good pass rusher - he's outstanding.
But, the only thing you want is a guy that can rush the edge?? He's not an OLB, maybe he could convert to one in 1 or 2 year's, but right now he is an 4-3 DE.
Now, i'm not a Upshaw fan, and he's not as athletic as Perry, but look at he's film, he plays 2 and 3 point stance, make dropbacks like an OLB and is a run stuffer, the only film i've seen on Perry is Pass rush.

Clemson is creating some good college players, but they really find it hard to adapt to the NFL level, now - Branch could make me shut my mouth on this one, but the history of Clemson player's is difficult to look past.

Just feel like Still is going to disappoint, i know that's easy and rubbish to say, but i just feel he is overrated.

Agree that Jenkins is more talented, would even say if he was 6 foot and less off-field issues, he would clearly be the #1 CB this year. But Gilmore is 6 foot, no off-field issues and is not a ******* rabbit like Jenkins, Gilmore is not afraid of making a tackle, to me it seems like Jenkins is a Asante Samuel type, that is a shy tackler.
The Packers really need a physical corner, Gilmore is that and fits the Packers sheme as well.

Scheme is not as important as you think it is. You take the best player available. What makes you think Nick Perry can be a 3-4 outside linebacker and Whitney Mercilus can't? Nick Perry himself says he doesn't really want to play in the 3-4. Mercilus is inconsistent? He led the nation in sacks and forced fumbles.

Are the guys you put above only guys that fit the scheme? I'm assuming it is that way because Fletcher Cox is completely left off the list. Kuechly is a guy I love and he is one of the safest picks in this year's draft. According to scheme he is a 4-3 inside linebacker. You also contradict yourself a couple more times if you are making the scheme argument.

Again, scheme is not all that important. I would be ecstatic if we got the chance to take Fletcher Cox or Luke Kuechly. Players are not strictly one position and the average defender will have to learn a plethora of different plays and schemes by the time their career is over. Fletcher Cox certainly has the athleticism and size to be a defensive end in a three technique. With the way Ted Thompson values his defensive lineman, I'm sure he would love the opportunity to replace Cullen Jenkins.

Football players are football players. Don't over think it.

That's a good way of looking at it with Gilmore. I agree he does fit Ted's image of a defensive back as well. I guess I just really like the upside guys. Branch is probably my least favorite of all the guys we might draft for the same reason and the fact that it doesn't really seem like he has a consistent motor. He has taken plays off. Perry and Upshaw are both "tweeners" and will have to make some sort of adjustment no matter where they play. With what you said about Still, we all get those feelings about different players don't we? ;) I don't think the NFL draft is a crapshoot like some people do, but I think you just never know with some guys. What would your ideal pick be for the Packers in the first round?

The guys I listed are the consensus top ~35 players... sorry I forgot about Cox; I'm not looking at a draft tracker or list of players.

Um scheme really is important when you pick a player. Suh is terrific player, but why would Green Bay waste his talent as a NT or DE in a 3-4 scheme? Cox might be a great player, but he's only great if you let him do what he does great. Players in a 3-4 scheme do interchange position. NTs play DE because all they do is eat up blockers, OLB play ILB because ILB need to rush and OLB need to cover, CBs play S because they need to cover TEs and blitz. It goes both ways for literally every position in a 3-4 defense as long their core position isn't changed.

I have Kuechly listed as a LB because I believe he can play any LB position, but his best skills are that of an ILB. Mercilus is inconsistent because he only does one thing well, pass rushing, albeit great talent he is a one trick pony. It's really not contradicting myself when I say DE/NT or DE/OLB because I was referring to a 3-4 scheme not everyone's scheme. Have to remember Capers like to move his linebackers and requires them to do everything. If I don't think someone can do that, they don't fit the ideal scheme.

Currently Green Bay has a 2-3 player rotation at ROLB. Walden is the presumed pass rusher, Zombo the cover guy, and Jones can do both in a pinch. While they have Clay Matthews taking every snap on defense doing everything. I see 4 players capable of that in this draft: Upshaw, McClellin, Irvin, and Kuechly.

I guess that's where we disagree. Von Miller for instance plays linebacker in a 4-3 defense and won defensive rookie of the year with 11.5 sacks. People were saying why would the Broncos limit Von Miller since they have a 4-3 defense? Why not take Dareus because he fits the scheme and fills a need? I understand how the 3-4 defense works. If we take a player we are going to put them in a position to do what they do great.

In any case, I like players who don't have their stock soar because of a good combine showing. That's why I agree with you on Upshaw and Kuechly. If we can trade up or somehow a player like that falls to us I would be ecstatic.

No I think the Broncos had it right with Miller being a 4-3 OLB. He doesn't do well when offensive linemen get their hands on him. He won Defensive RoY for other reasons than his sacks. I think he and Zach Brown compare favorably and are best suited in a 4-3 defense where they can use their speed rushing abilities and coverage skills.

I have a feeling Upshaw might fall to them. With QBs like Tannehill and Weeden climbing up the boards along with other prospects he could fall right into their laps. I'll be straight about Perry; he'll probably be a 4-3 defensive end. I don't think he has the drive to play OLB where he will be asked to do it all, but I still like him as a pass rusher. In that regard I like Bruce Irvin more than him because he has a high motor and played any position asked of him. I also think Irvin is a lot higher on the "real" board than people think, and no I'm not in love with only his combine numbers. He has the greatest potential at OLB in this years class and a 2nd day steal. I can even see him going in the first round if pass rushers are getting snatched up, which I think they will be.

Would take Cox, even if we should trade up a few picks, I believe a stud DE is more important than an great OLB, look at the year with and without Cullen Jenkins, in 2010 CM3 looked like a monster and Walden a decent starter, 2011 CM3 looked average and Walden was by far the worst rated OLB in the NFL.

What about Donta Hightower? He's an ILB, but does everything and at a high level, even a good pass rusher, that could be developed into an OLB. And if Hawk isn't showing any improvement this season, Hightower could move inside with Bishop, which he reminds a bit of. Just a Thought :)

I'm also on the Irvin bandwagon, think he has everything, people says he got some off-field issues, i just think they are blown out of proportions.

Well saying Zach Brown compare favorably is a bit of a stretch. Von Miller is head shoulders more talented. I do agree that they are similar players. Looking back at the pick, it looked like a fantastic decision. Von Miller is a great player. He could play 3-4 OLB just as easily IMO. He had more pass rush attempts than Aldon Smith last year. Part of that is because he is needed more on every play.

I have been following this year's draft since last year's draft ended. Irvin is a guy I like because he has had hype for a while now. Bruce Irvin is very talented for sure, but I'm not sure if he can stop the run. Definitely worth a shot in the later rounds.

Just out of curiosity, what are some other prospects you like that fit the 3-4 defensive end position? Do you like Jared Crick? He was considered a top half of the first round prospect before he got injured. Seems like someone we could take a chance on. Any corners or safeties you think would be good for us?

This.

Donta' Hightower would be great in a 3-4 system. We aren't talking about him too much because we have greater needs in the secondary and with our pass rush. I wouldn't mind the pick at all. I would actually like it because it would show Ted Thompson really likes him and thinks he is the BPA.

The draft is my favorite time of the year. I trust in Ted whatever he decides to do. I'm not going to be the type to complain if he doesn't draft my favorite player. I have studied a lot of film, but this is his day job. He has done this for years and he is really good at it. Maybe the best there is.

At Defensive End I like Billy Winn from Boise St and Devon Still. Winn is a day two prospect for sure and can draws comparisons to Cullen Jenkins. I also like the value Crick brings to the table; talent is obvious but I haven't seen any tape on him to really say anything. Well I love Mark Barron, but his pro day went very well so he won't be falling. Trumaine Johnson has the size to play safety and a fairly capable corner (I like him at Safety more than corner.) Another guy from Boise St. I like is Safety George Iloka. He shows good instincts from what I've seen and a good project.

Corner is really a bit thin this year after the first round. I hear good things about Josh Robinson, but there aren't any true sleeper picks. I don't consider a corner like Gilmore a sleeper because he'll be going in the first round most likely. Alfonzo Dennard might be worth a shot.

Donta' Hightower would be great in a 3-4 system. We aren't talking about him too much because we have greater needs in the secondary and with our pass rush. I wouldn't mind the pick at all. I would actually like it because it would show Ted Thompson really likes him and thinks he is the BPA.

Inside linebackers need to rush in the 3-4 as well. I honestly see him fitting as nickel rusher and Green Bay plays a lot of nickel.

I have been following this year's draft since last year's draft ended. Irvin is a guy I like because he has had hype for a while now. Bruce Irvin is very talented for sure, but I'm not sure if he can stop the run. Definitely worth a shot in the later rounds.

You don't see him stopping the run effectively because he was disgustingly misused at WVU. They had him with his hand in the dirt against 300 pound linemen as a 240 pound DE. He was mainly used as a 3rd down rusher because of the scheme they ran, 3-3-5, so he's never had the chance to tackle someone with a full head of steam in the open field. Oh wait he did that QBs, he'll make the transition to OLB and develop enough technique between the draft and Sept. 4th to be a starter.

TE?!? This is a HORRIBLE year for TE, even worse than center and safety. RB however is a good stock, better than WR at least. This year is full of pass rush, all you can eat. I hear the OG is good this year too. DE is tricky. Not much in the way of coverage, but substantial enough to find decent projects. QB could bring some surprises, but little have the arm strength. LOT of mediocrity which also can mean potential. Ted is going to go HAM

I don't know if we are going to stay put at our spot at 28. We could move up if TT likes a certain player enough. Get a guy like Barron, Cox, even Kuechly. We could also move down. Maybe seep into the early second and get a player like McClellin and also add to our already huge amount of picks.

TT could trade up or down, I'd bet on it.
But no way would Kuechly be the guy. Can't play 3 ILB's.
They like Hawk a lot more than we do.
Bishop is entrenched and improving there.
