Question : With the recent signing of Woodson, the possibility of Hawk as well as the Bates system in place ( feel free to add more) How much better do you all think our D will be this year ( keeping in consideration ) that Bates is gone.

I know this is somewhat of a general question but I was hoping for some gut thoughts on the subject of our D outlook in comparison to last year.

Cheers !!!

I have never seen Pickett play, but I think that G Jackson was very solid last year, when he played. I think that will be a key. As long as A Harris plays the same, the D will be top third.

well I like that you bring up the System is the same, which is...very important.

But the coach is the same too, and by that i mean...he was with the team LAST YEAR too. He is familiar with players, scheme, management, etc. Hes been bates right hand man for 5 years prior to this.

It should be better than last years, which was pretty solid, except in the category of TAKEAWAYS. We didnt have many takeaways at all. Hopefully Nick\MArquand\Harris\Woodson can get their paws on the ball more.

HOWEVER....

That starts with a good pass rush. KGB is coming off a career best season, Kampman continues to be nothing but guts and heart all the way. The addition of Pickett(who said he is underrated as a pass rusher) is HUGE. Jenkins at other DT is another lineman. We also have monster depth at Dline. I like it a lot.

BUt yeah, it should be a bit better than last years, especially in takeaways. Thats MY take on it anyway.

KGB isn't coming off a career best season. His tackles may have gone up, but he was sub-par as a pass rusher, which is why we pay him the big bucks. Here's hoping he can rebound, although with Tamba Hali potentially falling to the second round maybe we should pick him and give KGB some competition next year.

hes always been sub-par. Hes very one-note, and if they double team him, hes useless. Hopefully pickett and jenkins make it so they CANT double team him.

I agree, hes very overpaid. Thank MS for that one.

This will be the first time that Barnett is working on mastering the skills rather than learning a new defense and I think he will benefit greatly from that.

Thanks trom, I did not know that the new D coach was Bates right hand man for "5 years". I don't know how I missed that but that would make a difference. Cheers !!!

I am hoping top ten to Toronto !!!

I have never seen Pickett play either 4th and 26 but my gut tells me this will be a good signing !!!

Thanks Gents

IMO, with the current upgrades and projecting Hawk as part of the defence I see a top 10 defence. Depending on the turnover ratio, it could be top 5.

I think that a top 10 rating would be a good improvement over last year. If you look at how D is rated, yards, there were several reasons that Pack was rated high: Teams were not down at the end of the game being forced to rack up passing yards to catch up, they played a terrible schedule (M. McMahon over McNabb AND Batch over Rothlesburger, not to mention chicago Orton and Grossman), and lastly the short field 29 times.

formidable if we can up the takeaways. and trom, i think signing some good quality linemen that will garner double teams and that is EXACTLY what KGB needs. i say top ten. and also, people have been down on woodson about his lack of INT's... that's because nobody threw to whomever he was covering!

I stated this to Tro, long before the hypocritical hissy fit, but he continues to state that nonsense.

KGB had a very down year last year. If you are stating tackles he had 1 or 2 more than the previous years, whippity do.

His Sacks were down dramatically and actually had a career low amount as a starter.

In NO way was this a career year

KGB's sacks were down because of the supporting cast. As much of a little ***** Cledius Hunt was, he really opened things up for KGB.

I BEG to differ. Hunt was a lazy person, who had a good game ONCE in a while. The fact is that KGB needs help. You can't expect the guy to play the whole game and provide a pass rush throughout. He simply isn't built as an every down DE. He needs someone to spell him for a few plays, so he can get his energy back. KGB is a pass rushing specialist who is being used far too much to have an impact. A Hali, or even Montgomery could help spell KGB from time to time and allow him to rush the QB more potently.

No doubt KGB is a specialist who had a tough time last year getting to the QB. It had NOTHING to do with ******** Hunt

I like the overall look of our defense. I like the extra mini camp to help their talent gel..

This is the projected lineup

DE:KGB/DT:pickett/DT:Jenkins or Cole/DE:Kampman
SLB:Taylor/MLB:Barnett/WLB:?
CB:Harris/FS:Collins/SS:Manuel/CB:Woodson

WLB is a tough call right now and our one weakness. Hawk fills it perfecatly but in round 2 we could add Thomas Howard or DeMeco Ryans which are both great picks.. Vernon Davis and Howard in my opinion is a great round 1 and 2 picks. Hawk though in round 1 would really fill out the defense.
