Smith signed to help offensive line
Friday, September 15, 2006
BY DAVE HUTCHINSON
Star-Ledger Staff
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- As expected, the Jets, concerned about depth along the offensive line, yesterday agreed to terms with ex-Dolphin Wade Smith.

Smith, a fourth-year pro, worked out for the Jets on Wednesday. He's expected to be in uniform Sunday against the Patriots at Giants Stadium. The 6-4, 320-pounder is a versatile performer who can play several positions along the line

Not saying this guy is starting quality but he is a 4th year pro so he must have a little something going for him.

Let's face it fans we are sorely lacking in depth on the OL and according to reports Teddy has not even brought anyone in to look at.

What the hell is going on in Green Bay?

I think it's just easier finding the big ol refridgerator types than the quicker zone blocking lighter one that we need.

Gm's means plural... where is the second and all the others that are implied?

Houston, Atlanta and Denver run the Zone Blocking scheme. Those are the teams you want to see transactions for picking up OL. Not a team who signs the fattest guy they can contract.

The point here is of the players brought in to Green Bay this week for a look see none were offensive lineman.
We are sorely in need of depth on the O-line and they are not brining anybody in.

Your 2nd thought is right on the money, The Packers, by adopting the Zone blocking scheme without having the players who fit the scheme have severely restricted themselves as far as picking up players as they are needed.
I believe the ZBS will work in time, but the Pack didn't have the necessary depth to implement it all at once and are paying a price for it now.

yooper....it is kinda like going into an icy lake....just jump right in and quit farting around trying to ease yourself in. We are running zone, we have some players that fit better than others, we will develop the guys we have rather than deal with others' rejects.

Assuming Spitz can't play on Sunday and with Coston injured, the depth chart, which doesn't reflect Palmer, shows 6 O-Lineman.
Five are starting so that leaves White as the only backup to those 5.
Not much depth to develop digs.

Yeah but soon we will using Rob Davis as center and rolling Wells out to guard. We have so many players that also are KR's, we now need dual role OL! Bottom line is the reality of injuries happen, and we are 1 player away on the line to having no back ups. Forget about taking a rest during the game, the starting OL now will have to play the whole game, every snap.

Who has Houston, Atlanta and Denver picked up regarding OL that the Packers had a chance to sign. Remember, Houston gets first claim on the waiver over the Packers.

The Packers brought in quite a few OL. Remember those threads bashing Ted for signing them 'unknown' players?

It's not like Anthony Munoz or Larry Allen are in their prime and available.

32 NFL Teams
53 NFL Players per Team.

The talent is thin.
