Based on what? The man threw 50 touchdown passes. Lets take a look at even the guys in NFL history that have thrown 40+ touchdowns in a season: (2013) Peyton Manning - 55 TDs - MVP (2007) Tom Brady - 50 TDs - MVP (2018) Patrick Mahomes - 50 TDs - MVP (2004) Peyton Manning - 49 TDs - MVP (1984) Dan Marino - 48 TDs - MVP (2011) Drew Brees - 46 TDs (2011) Aaron Rodgers - 45 TDs - MVP (1986) Dan Marino - 44 TDs (2012) Drew Brees - 43 TDs (2011) Matt Stafford - 41 TDs (1999) Kurt Warner - 41 TDs - MVP (2014) Andrew Luck - 40 TDs (2016) Aaron Rodgers - 40 TDs Now obviously all players that have thrown 50+ have won the MVP and ever player that's in the top 5 have won the MVP. The first snub on the list is Drew Brees' 2011 season in which he got eclipsed by the guy right below him on the list with 45 TDs (Aaron Rodgers). Marino got eclipsed by Lawrence Taylor (not another quarterback), Brees in 2012 got eclipsed by Adrian Peterson (not another quarterback), Stafford got eclipsed by Aaron Rodgers who threw more TDs, Luck got eclipsed by Rodgers who threw just 2 fewer TDs but also had 11 more interceptions and inferior passer rating numbers. And Rodgers got snubbed by Matt Ryan who threw 3 fewer touchdown passes, but also had a passer rating off the charts and threw the same number of interceptions. So really, the only 40+ touchdown seasons were eclipsed by other quarterbacks who had very comparable TD numbers (no more of a variance than 3), or it was eclipsed by exceptional outlier seasons from other positions (Taylor, Peterson). When comparing Mahomes and Brees…. Mahomes - 50 TDs, 12 INTs, 113.8 passer rating, 81.8 QBR, 5,097 yards, 66% completions Brees - 32 TDs, 5 INTs, 115.7 passer rating, 80.8 QBR, 3,992 yards, 74.4% completions I understand the interceptions argument, but Mahomes attempted 91 more throws than Brees did. Passer rating and QBR's are remarkably similar, and for me, it's just tough to get past an 18 touchdown difference and a more than 1,000 yard difference. Also keep in mind that Mahomes was doing this while only losing 4 games in which his defense allowed 41 points a game in those losses. I just don't see any rational argument for snubbing a 50 TD/5,000 yard player.
