The Packers vs the Lions is the National Football League's oldest continuous rivalry. They've played each other every season since 1930. The 1982 strike cancelled the Packers-Bears games that year but then and again in the second strike season of 1987 the labor dispute was settled in time for the Green Bay- Detroit games.

Sunday's game will be the 172nd meeting between these two clubs and the Packers come into it with a commanding 30 game edge in the series at 97-67-7.

These two have been competitors for championships in the past. In the early '60's the Lions were the Packers' chief rivals in the Western Conference. In the '90's they were regularly racing each other in the NFC Central. As late as last season they had a showdown game in the regular season finale for the NFC North title.

Of course, the distinguishing feature of the rivalry has been the Packers' 24 year winning streak against Detroit at home in Wisconsin. No Lions team, no matter how good or bad, has been able to win in Green Bay or Milwaukee since 1991.

Most of the reason for that, of course, is that the Packers have had the better team most of the time. But there was also a signal change in how games between these two played out since Detroit became a home dome team with the opening of the Pontiac Silverdome in 1975.

Up until that point the Lions played their home games outdoors on real grass at old Tiger Stadium. Like the Packers and other clubs in their division they played in some formidable outdoor weather conditions. Coming to Wisconsin was no different element than the Lions were accustomed to or built for.

They won or tied several games against Vince Lombardi's Packers in Green Bay or Milwaukee during the 1960's and were certainly unintimidated when they entered Lambeau in the opening game of the 1970 season and humiliated the Packers 40-0.

Since 1975, though, the Packers have taken over the rivalry going 50-33 overall and 32-9 at home against Detroit. In the Silverdome and Ford Field they are only 18-24.

Before they were dome. Some great Lions players and nemeses of the Packers in Detroit's outdoor football days.

I was wondering if this was true or not.. Wow! I was 3 last time Detroit won in Green Bay!!

Does this mean the Lions finally win? Law of averages?
