Poor play calling. Nobody is fooled by the wildcat with Golden back there. He's not going to muscle through the line. Stacking 3 receivers then motioning the RB out to the flat to run a screen is something that doesn't even work at the high school level unless you have some big receivers to throw blocks. With 3rd & 3 you don't throw the ball deep. You use the short middle routes if you intend throwing it. But you should be running it anyway if you're inside the 40 because you figure you have two downs to make that short yardage. Don't put yourself in the trick by forcing yourself to have to pass on 4th down because the metrics for making it with a run on 4th down aren't good. Matt? Why don't you like the short routes over the middle? They're wide open. Yet we keep seeing the out routes, screens, and trying to fit the ball into double coverage in deeper routes. Don't you trust them to move the ball? Yeah! You threw the ball to Romeo 10 times and he caught 7. All but two were highly contested and he still grabbed them. Meanwhile, Love is looking all over the field and not even seen Doubs crossing in the shorter routes where he can move the chains and we end up with another incomplete pass. Is the problem with the play design or is Love avoiding throwing to him thinking he's going to get the big score? Either way, fix it! Fix it now, or we're going to be in the playoffs but a mark to be booted by a team not as good as ours. The defense ended up trying to make big plays for turnovers because they saw the offense was not even close to being competitive because of play selection. That last drive by the Panthers was a classic. They saw the shorter routes, used them, moved the chains, and beat us with the same tactic we should be using to put the ball in the end zone ourselves. No reason to be yelling that the sky is falling. This team was never an elite team.
