Some highlights ( or low lights)

The FBI is investigating allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated.

The referee had a gambling problem, according to the official, and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance.

Those studying Donaghy's games might have noticed some trends.

When the home team was favored by 0-4½ points, it went 5-12 in games officiated by Donaghy this season, according to Covers.com, a Web site that tracks referee trends. Home underdogs were 1-7 when the spread was 5-9.5 points.

He reffed game 3 of the Suns/Spurs series...there were TONS of blown calls and no-calls in favor of the Spurs in that game. Hmm...think he bet on the Spurs?

It´s quite smart to such a thing, if you don´t get caught

Anyway this can be a problem if many referees start to do such things.
    ´
But I think there are alot of honoest refrees out there

The basketball referee bet money on games HE was officiating. Meaning if the team he wanted to win was losing, he could call fouls on the other team so that the one he wanted to have win could catch up.
In other words, he could try to fix a game so he and his friends could win money. He CHEATED.

Just one more reason not to watch the NBA. Like I needed another one.

Well after this week, somehow I think it will be a larger issue than just one Ref.

From the way things sound this morning... I wouldn't be surprised if more Refs and some players are involved.

agreed vikes. i'm not defending the guy, but I'm pretty sure he didn't cheat simply to "make some money". He apparently had huge gambling debts and had to resort to teaming up with mafia bookies. If i got in that kind of trouble (i don't gamble, so i never would), i would choose cheating over being killed by the mob for not paying them.

i expect that he'll cooperate fully with the cops and roll over on somebody high up in this gambling ring so they end up putting him in protective custody. if he goes to general population, they'll kill him. I've seen Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed... you don't mess with the mafia!
