In the Mock draft I've been participating in I don't have Porter rated as a 1st Round pick. The only two Defensive Backs I have that may be worth it are Brandon Flowers and Reggie Smith. However Given that Cason has been taken I'd consider what Sangill said maybe drafting Dustin Keller the TE from Purdue, while he may not be a first round prospect (I have him rated in the 2nd Round), he is the best Tight End on the market I believe.

The other positions I'd look at are DE Lawrence Jackson of USC. I'm shocked he's not been picked yet, Sam Baker is another possibility at OT given that Brandon ALbert is off the board. ANother option is RB Jonathan Stewart of Oregon. Yes i know he had an injury, but he's still the second or third best running back in this class, and I think he would fit nicely in the Packers Offense. I wouldn't even look at WR, FB, LB, DT, or Safety at this point none of them on my list are rated all that highly in the first that are not already taken. Although some mocks have James Hardy of Indiana rated in the first round.

I think I'd go for the Defensive End Lawrence Jackson of USC though. It's not an Uber need pick, but he's definitily worth a first round pick. Barring that I'd have taken Reggie Smith the CB/S Hybrid from Oklahoma over Tracy Porter.

Felix Jones really is not worth a first round pick, Stewart is better, but Cherilous and Sam Baker are going to be good Oline prospects too.

I'm of the opinion though that the Packers can get by with a 2nd or 3rd round pick for the Oline if a prospect like Smith or Jackson are there. Jackson wasn't there in our mock so I took Cason.

all about da packers said:
Mass, I'm curious if you thought that Porter was the BPA, or you more so attempted to fill a need for the Pack?

There may have been some RB's that were BPA, but I don't know how they would fit on the team. Tracy Porter I see as a bit of a sleeper and with his man coverage skills and all around game, expect him to be close to BPA at this point, especially for the Packers, yes.

Just FYI, some guys I'm looking at for the 2nd round include Martellus Bennet, Fred Davis, Heath Benedict, Dustin Keller, Patrick Lee, and then obviously if anyone intriguing drops.

Isn't PAtrick Lee a Corner? If you've already bit the bullet on porter, I don't see the point in picking a corner again in the 2nd Round we are pretty solid at corner even with the apparent age there.

I did try to trade down, as annoyed as I would be if TT did the same. I'd rather have a 2nd and 3rd than this 1st, considering how the mock went.

Mock Draft, our first pick is in

Round 1 - DE Tommy Blake, TCU - KGB meets Reggie White. Awesome atheltic ability. Would fit in great with the speed of our LB's. He was a top 20 pick until personal issues which caused him to go MIA. Guy has a HUGE RED FLAG attached to him. He is a very religious person. If the guy could get it all straightened out he could be a true force, and at pick #30, WITH 2 in the 2nd, I say roll the dice.

Round 2 - TE Martellus Bennett, Texas A&M - Big Guy, very athletic. He has great hands as well.

Round 2 - OT Oneil Cousins, UTEP - Fits our blocking scheme. Very versatile. Could easily move to G.

Round 3 - FB Owen Scmitt, WV - Great Blocker and Great Hands. Perfect fit for GB.

Round 4 - S Quentin Demps, UTEP - We need a big play guy, Demps could be that guy. The guy is a playmaker. Paired with Bigby could be a versatile secondary.

Round 5 - CB Tyvon Branch, Connecticut - Tough at the line, great run support. Could also be used at S.

Round 7 - QB Ricky Santos, New Hampshire - I love the guy. He plays unconventional and has a fire for the game. Odds are against him but hey, who knows?

Tommy Blake suffers from social anxiety, he wont handle the NFL and hes overweight now.

Why pass on Reggie Smith for Tracey Porter? Smith is more versatile and just better. He could probably start at safety in the NFL if a team needs him or even CB. That's who I would of went if I were making the pick. Just my opinion though.

Porter has better corner skills, imo. Smith is a tweener and could get burned in the man coverage that we play and that I would LOVE to see continue in Green Bay. I think Porter could absolutely thrive under Woodson/Harris for a year or two, and fill in at nickel while he does so.
Saying that, Talib would've been my pick if he were there.

Update: 2nd round is done. Here it is. NOTE: Wheeler and Davis went 54 and 55, which really pissed me off. The round could've looked a lot different for GB.

32 DOLPHINS - Sam Baker, OT, USC
33 RAMS - Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC
34 TITANS (from Houston) - Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina
35 CHIEFS - Anthony Collins, OT, Kansas
36 JETS - Curtis Lofton, LB, Oklahoma
37 BRONCOS (from Falcons) - Dustin Keller, TE, Purdue
38 RAVENS - Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky
39 49ERS - Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State
40 SAINTS - Reggie Smith, FS/CB, Oklahoma
41 BILLS - Justin King, CB, Penn State
42 SAINTS (from Broncos) - Pat Sims, DT, Auburn
43 VIKINGS (from Panthers) - Trevor Laws, DT, Notre Dame
44 BEARS - Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville
45 LIONS - Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
46 BENGALS Ali Highsmith, LB, LSU
47 PANTHERS (from Vikings) - Marcus Harrison, DT, Arkansas
48 FALCONS - Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech
49 EAGLES - Early Doucet, WR, LSU
50 CARDINALS - Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina
51 REDSKINS - James Hardy, WR, Indiana
52 BUCCANEERS - Donnie Avery, WR, Houston
53 STEELERS - Carl Nicks, OT, Nebraska
54 TEXANS - Phillip Wheeler, LB, Georgia Tech
55 SEAHAWKS - Fred Davis, TE, USC
56 PACKERS - Martellus Bennett, TE, Texas A&M
57 DOLPHINS - Terrell Thomas, CB, USC
58 JAGUARS - Red Bryant, DT, Texas A&M
59 COLTS - Chilo Rachal, OG, USC
60 PACKERS - Chris Ellis, DE, Virginia Tech
61 COWBOYS - Jason Jones, DE, Eastern Mich
62 PATRIOTS - Xavier Adibi, LB, Virginia Tech
63 GIANTS - Gosder Cherilus, OT, BC

Bennett is self explanatory. The idea behind Ellis is that... well.. I'm just not completely happy with KGB. And he's been productive, so I don't have a great argument for my reasoning. I just think in a year or two we are going to want to trade him. In comes Ellis, a more complete DE who could be a steal after he bulks up some in our free weight program.

I was going to go with Wheeler, but he went at 54. I don't know man, I didn't see any other linebacker worth taking. Henderson's injury history scares me.

I'm hoping to grab Heath Benedict in the 3rd. I have a bad feeling about Cherilus, and I'm a BC alum/fan.

I do agree with you about LB and OT. Just didn't see any good options at that spot.

Musta hurt seeing Fred Davis go the pick RIGHT before Martellus, I like Bennett though. Also too bad about the Wheeler situation, coulda taken him and then Bennett, that woulda been sweet!

Man so 31 teams in the second and Cherilus falls to the Giants. That's just... Wow Andre Woodson in the second, must be a homer.

I think I would have taken the other OG CHil Rachal rather then Bennet. I don't think we needed a potent Tight End so much, but I do like the Chris Ellis pick.

You talk like being a tweener is a bad thing. It can be but not when you play both positions as well as Smith has. Smith would be rock solid in man to man. He's strong and has the size. A little bit of a Charles Woodson clone in my opinion by the way he plays.

Porter is a good corner but in the man coverage I wonder if he can take the pounding that a guy like Woodson and Harris do. He's not that strong and is more of a finesse player. This would be an easy place for him to fit in but he strikes me more of a project but I see him more as a 2nd round project. Maybe trade down for a guy like him where as Smith I'd take at 31. Again just offering my perspective. No matter who the Packers pick I'm sure I'll find positives and negatives about him.

did you say there wasnt a Linebacker worth drafting... then take Chris Ellis instead of Xavier Adibi?

Xavier Adibi is what offensive linemen worried about that made Chris Ellis look good.

he is a ball hawk that is straight up disruptive. i would definetly have taken Xavier as a DE/LB combo and backed up Brady Popp with the Xman.
