Is Mike still out there as a free agent? If he is I think we should pick him up in place of Rayner. Dave I thought started out good but as of late I dont think he has been looking the greatest. You can dissagree with me on this and it is no problem. My second point is Rayner is average at best and why not get the guy that has one of the best FG precentages in the history of the NFL? He has had a weak year so far. But if we bring him in maybe a change of places would do him good. Not to mention maybe have him for the future. Or even if they wanted to, sign him for the rest

for the rest of the year and then if he does a decent job sign him for next year. I would think he would be a much more solid bet for the packers than Rayner.

No way in my opinion.

I understand your view of Vanderajackass' accomplishments but he has been a headcase for a year now. Plus, keep in mind he has kicked his entire career in a dome.

We have been somewhat spoiled with how good Longwell was. He was really underappreciated in moy opninion.

Rayner however, has been doing fine in my eyes. He is in the top five kickers in the league statistically. Is 16 of 21 which isn't bad. (longwell is 18 of 21 in a dome) Plus, his kickoff length and height has been superior.

I think we have found a good long term replacement for Longwell in Rayner.

I wouldn't touch him.

The guy is messed up since missing the kick and not to mention he bring a attitude with him and he's a kicker. He'll also want a pretty nice contract as well. I'd avoid him. If he can't kick in domes. He can't kick in Lambeau in my opinion.

It is amazing to me how quickly people can turn on someone. The responses above are a variation on "put in the backup QB because he's better than the starter".

So why would an old fox like Bill Parcells sour on a veteran kicker unless the guy is a turd? Is Parcells an idiot? It tells me Parcells thinks there's a better option...Martin Gramattica? He's been passed over numerous times by teams NEEDING kickers. Does that tell you where VDJ is? Does me.

Rayner, folks, has done a more than adequate job. Longwell missed a few too early on before he got the feel of Lambeau. Rayner kicked in the snow at Michigan State and isn't a whiner like VDJ.

Put in the free agent kicker....great.

The guy is accurate, true.
Kicking most of his kicks in a dome helped his accuracy, true.
The guy is a ****, true.

Stick with Rayner until he proves he's a failure. He hasn't done that yet.

Is this topic for real or it just because you're bored and wanted something to talk about??

Vanny doesn't have a strong leg, hasn't performed well in bad weather throughout his career and has been terrible all season. Raynor lacks experience, has a strong leg, good accuracy, fairly consistent this season and has experience in bad weather.

He needs some more experience, which is perfect for him to get this season. Basically the same can be said of about 70% of the roster. He's doing fine. Vanny would be a definite downgrade now and in the long run.

GO PACK GO!!!

Yeah this topic is for real. What has Rayner proved to us? Speaking of kicking bad in bad weather.....I believe Rayner missed a FG that was blocked in the snow. ? Yes? If you ask me guys like Rayner(who probably wont ammount to be anything) are a horse a piece. You can pick up almost any guy from the street and have him do a decent job kicking. Look at our punter who we picked up from a bar. There ya go.

rayner is 15/19, one of which blocked, which at least I am attributing to terrible special teams on the whole

now we can go into next season:
A) With Dave Rayner as our kicker, and have one less spot to worry about on this team

B) With another platoon of Billy Cundiff/a bunch of rookie free agents...I'll take Rayner

Do you remember the low kicks by Longwell that were blocked by the Bears to lose the game early in his career? That was done in perfect weather.

Do you actually expect Vandercrap to improve our kicking situation when he couldn't get it done in Dallas??

This is Raynor's first season of being the main kicker (he did kickoffs for Vandercrap in Indy because Vanny couldn't kickoff well in a dome). He's not probowl material in his first year, but to be ready cut the guy with some has-been joke just because our ST allowed too much penetration on a low kick is ridiculous!

Why are we even wasting time talking about the kicker? He hasn't cost us any games thusfar. He's young and at this point the best part is his long kickoffs. There shouldn't be any question that it's worthwhile to sit back and let him make a few mistakes this season for a chance to see if he'll develop into a good kicker for us.

Rayner has showed accuracy, distance on his FGs, and consistency on kickoffs with good distance and hangtime (and our coverage still cannot get it done) and is one of the higher ranked kickers in the league if memory serves me well. The block in the snow was the result of major penetration by the DL. The ball was neither low, nor off target from what I have seen...what I did see was a guy busting through our line and getting his hands up. ***** happens!

Looking at all the responses, I don't find any that support putting in the backup (VDJ) we all would rather have Rayner and like him. So where is the negativity from?

I would pass on him.

Rayner has missed a few field goals, but Vanderjagt has alot of unnesessary baggage.

No thanks.

Don't forget that Rayner has already tied Longwell's long (and team record) FG of 54 yards and broke it the next week -- only to have it taken away due to penalties on the line.

If the Packers get Vanderjagt, they will need to have a kickoff specialist. Hey, how about.....Dave Rayner! Man, would that suck for him, to be kickoff specialist again with Vanderjagt kicking field goals, just like with the Colts.

But I agree with most people here that Vanderjagt would not be good for the Packers. He's a dome kicker.
