Packers: Protecting playing surface is the No. 1 priority By Kendra Meinert kmeinert@greenbaypressgazette.com As the concert industry greases the wheels for another season of touring, music fans needn't look for those buses to pull into Lambeau Field. Not this summer — and quite likely, not summers in the near future. The ongoing excavation of Lambeau's current playing field and the installation of a new hybrid turf in time for the Green Bay Packers preseason has taken the stadium out of the running to host any concerts this summer, said John Jones, president and chief operating officer for the team. But the renovated stadium hasn't hosted a concert in more than 20 years, and the Packers say they're not looking to get into the music business so long as there is a risk that setup of the mammoth stage productions could damage the field. "Packers games are the priority,'' Jones said. "We love to look at all options and explore them, but the quality of that playing surface for our football team is the single most important consideration.'' Lambeau has long been a source of speculation when it comes to hosting major acts like the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney and U2. The Packers' firm stand on protecting the field has become widely known within the concert industry, and music promoters, like Live Nation, say after inquiries about bringing stadium concerts to Lambeau over the years, they have moved on to other venues.
