Actually, I'm one of those Vietnam vets and I remember it well. But, it isn't the generation that spit on us that's in leadership and quite honestly needs replacing. You see the spitters and those of us who served are the same generation.
I have a friend who experienced being spit on when he came back. He also said when guys came back from Vietnam, you didn't let employers know you were there, or you probably wouldn't get hired. It's a disgrace how you and many of the soldiers coming back were viewed and treated.

I didn't realize it until last year but the same folks that made that series also did one called The Pacific and one about the Bloody 100th bomber wing called Masters Of The Air. Both were interesting to watch.
Tom Hanks was the creator of all 3. Future generations (if there are any) will owe him a lot for the historical value of these works, which he was inspired to develop during his work on Saving Private Ryan.

Except for the greatest generation, any able-bodied man signed up, and the women worked in the factories....
The people that spit on our soldiers outnumbered them 50 to one.....maybe 500-1........
The young men who went to fight in Vietnam, were mainly drafted....... and if your daddy didn't know anyone to get you out of it, you went...... And fight, and what I believe was a war completely made up by the military industrial complex to line their pockets with money on the backs of dead young men from this country.
You could be against the war without spitting on your own young men who came home from hell.......
I have never been able to look at Jane Fonda with anything but disgust.
Sorry, I know getting political on a message board is probably as smart an idea as getting drunk in a bar and doing it but........I wish the greatest generation could come back for 15 minutes to smack everybody around and be like "what in the Sam.hell are y'all doing"?

And also, God bless you and your family and thank you for your service and sacrifice...... men like you are the backbone of this country like my father and you deserved.....and still deserve better!!!!!!!

Exactly my feeling. Hell, the way I saw it, some of us who were vehemently against the war were actually pro-troops; we didn't them to get killed or emotionally traumatized!

Same here, again. Entitled little brat. Sat there posing on the anti-aircraft gun with a helmet, just a few miles from where John McCain was being tortured. I can't watch her movies.

We're probably skating close to a line, but it's not like we're arguing about politics. More like a history discussion; I don't think this is anything controversial, although I wouldn't want to go much further with it.

They were the greatest generation......now.....the generation who spit on our soldiers coming home from Vietnam is in charge......and look how well they've done.
The people who made up the Greatest Generation have now almost all passed away.

I think V is right. He served in Vietnam and it was that generation who treated the vets so poorly. Awful stuff. Anyone who doesn't think there was sacrifice should visit the Vietnam Memorial in DC. Walking it from beginning to end is quite the experience. Overwhelming, actually.

I'm one of those people. I was told by a Human Resources person in a major corporation that guys like me were "Ticking time-bombs." They believed that it was just a matter of time until we'd become violent and harm others working for them.

I could tell you stories about people I know and have known who have dealt with issues their entire life since then because nobody gave a rip about what they were going through back then. It would put any horror story to shame.

If you've ever stared into the face of a widow or children who have lost their father in combat.......... It will change your perspective on our best and bravest for the rest of your life.......if you have a soul.

I never had to do that when I was in the military, but I did on several occasions when I was a cop. Every time I worried beforehand that I might not do it the best way possible to help the family members through that initial shock. It was one of the worst tasks associated with the job.

All you can do is be respectful and give the situation the reverence that it demands. There's no way to do it other than just to do it
I never had to do any notifications in an official capacity..... but my best friend died in our apartment bathroom from an undiagnosed heart condition that he was gone before he hit the floor and there was nothing I could do.......
Calling his parents, who were like family to me........was one of the worst experiences I've ever had to go through in my life.
