Packers | Jolly recovering well from rotator cuff surgery
Mon, 31 Mar 2008 19:54:24 -0700

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers DT Johnny Jolly (shoulder) is recovering well from rotator cuff surgery and appears to be in good condition, according to general manager Ted Thompson. Thompson wouldn't predict that Jolly would be ready 4 training camp, but he wouldn't rule it out

With all the passes he knocked down last year, I'm giving Jolly the nick name, "Johnny S.W.A.T."

After last seasons injury updates by McCarthy and Thompson, I'd take this with a grain of salt.

That said, at least Thompson/McCarthy didn't come out and say Jolly would be ready to go in a couple of weeks. That would've meant Jolly was done for the year.

I expect Jolly to pick up some of the production of Corey Williams, I love his ability to get his hands up and just tip/knock down passes.

This is true. For about 6 weeks with Bubba it was, "We're looking good for next week."

He's a monster all around. I really hope he stays healthy. We'll never notice Williams missing if he does.

Well, actually, we will notice Williams being gone.

Williams got 7 sacks 2 years in a row from the DT position, which is really hard to do. Swatting down passes is one thing (if I'm not mistaken, it's Cullen Jenkins who is the best on the team at that), but sacks from the middle is much better.

What I'm hoping for is Harrell can get the pressure from the middle that Williams got. I guess we'll see. Or maybe Jenkins will live up to the hype he brought us in preseason last year.

I dunno though, Corey Williams had two 3-sack games so that statistic is a little bloated. While I do think we'll miss Williams substantially at the beginning of the season, we have enough depth that new guys should be able to step up and fit in after a couple of weeks.

I really like Jolly. He really seems to react and feed off the crowd well, something that I think is really important. When the crowd started cheering, it's like he fed off of it and just increased his game that much more. I can't wait to see him back.

When did he get the surgery done?
I know it takes a year to rehab from that. (For average people) They of course have all the specialists to give him daily treatment.

Wouldn't you miss having someone who gets 3-sack games?

Anyone hardcore stats geeks know how many of those were KGB, oops, garbage sacks?

EDIT: Better yet, how many of those sacks came when the Packers were up more than two scores?

IMO, Jolly and Jenkins (with the possibility of Harrell) could well be the power of our DL. Jolly, to me, is a "Gil Brown" type in that he feeds off the excitement of the crowd. He loves it!! He also has the power to disrupt any O. His spirit is contageous. The 3 players I've mentioned are the keys to the success of our DL. We know we can count on Pickett. Now if the coaches can get max effort from Harrell, we can look forward to stopping ANY running game. In addition, our LBing should now be improved. Much to look forward to.

I expect us to draft a DT somewhere in the draft, in the one they are running on the ES Site, I had us taking Marcus Harrison the 307 DT from Arkansas, who would be great his first year as a part of our DT rotation. I can't believe he fell out of the 2nd Round though, and he probably won't on draft day. I still think we draft a DT, and possible a DE somewhere as well as an OL (Probably an OT who can also play inside), CB, TE, LB, and maybe a QB or Punter.
