Joe Philbin, the Packers offensive coordinator since 2007, is the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins will introduce Philbin on Saturday at a press conference scheduled for 4 p.m. ET which can be seen live on Dolphins.com.
Philbin and his family will relocate to South Florida just weeks after the tragic death of their son and brother, Michael Philbin, who passed away age 21. As Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald writes Philbin and his family will "begin a new life".
According to the Associated Press, the 50-year old Philbin first met with Miami officials on Jan. 7 and then the following day the body of his son was recovered in Oshkosh.
According to the Miami Herald he let his agents know that he would still be available for a second interview while he and his family coped with the stinging reality of what had occurred.
Miami has not actually been a model of stability. Philbin will be the seventh coach for the franchise in the last eight years. But it's Philbin's steadiness in character along with other various attributes which attracted the Dolphins leadership.
Dolphins team owner Stephen Ross said in a statement, “Joe has all the attributes that we were looking for when we started this process. Jeff Ireland and I felt Joe was the right choice to bring the Dolphins back to the success we enjoyed in the past.”
Further the task in Miami will be roster rebuilding the roster and the offense. The Bill Parcells-Tony Sparano experiment didn't work out and the Dolphins ranked in the bottom 10 in several offensive categories including total offense and points. The Dolphins may very well try to find a franchise quarterback in this year's draft and Philbin and his staff will start from there. But as James Walker of ESPN.com points out, Philbin might know a guy from Green Bay by the name of Matt Flynn who could very well be that franchise quarterback.
Some Dolphins fans have their doubts about Philbin, naturally as football fans often do express digitally here in the 21st century, wondering exactly who this Philbin guy is. Even the Dolphins went after Jeff Fisher but were turned down. And after all, McCarthy calls the plays on Sunday.
Greg Jennings had this to say "He does a ton,” the veteran wide out said via the Miami Herald.
"He’s comfortable being in front of the team. He’s definitely fully capable of being a head coach.”
Philbin the family man-knows how to deal with young people-and that is what being an NFL coach is all about, working with young men in their 20's.
Former Packers front office exec Andrew Brandt tweeted about Philbin, "Dolphin fans have reason to smile. Joe Philbin's a skilled offensive mind with great emotional intelligence in handling NFL players."
Philbin is described by everyone just about the way Mike McCarthy described him earlier this week.
“You start personally with his character,” McCarthy said via the Green Bay Press Gazette . “He’s a family man, a very respected individual on our staff. Professionally, I think he’s an outstanding communicator. Very knowledgeable. Great work ethic."
