The Green Bay Packers have hired Jeff Jagodzinski as their offensve coordinator, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports. Jagodzinski served as the Falcons' offensive line coach this season after working as the Falcons' tight ends coach in 2004.

The news about Jagodzinski comes just a day after new Packers head coach Mike McCarthy released six assistant coaches and two staff members in his first full day on the job.

Defensive coordinator Jim Bates, who interviewed for the head coaching job on Monday, was not among them and could stay with the team. Bates, who was supposed to meet with McCarthy on Friday, did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press.

"He's a man I respect, and the job he did this past year speaks for itself," McCarthy said Thursday. "I'd love to opportunity to sit down and see if we could work out the possibility of him working here."

Bates would have been a popular pick among Packers players to succeed Mike Sherman, who was fired Jan. 2 after the team's worst season in 15 years. In his first year as the Packers' defensive coordinator, Bates engineered a modest turnaround.

Green Bay had the league's 25th-ranked defense in 2004 and lost veteran safety Darren Sharper to free agency in the offseason. Despite injuries to key players this season, the Packers allowed an average of 293.1 yards per game, seventh-best in the league.

"I would love to see Jim Bates back again," linebacker Nick Barnett said Thursday. "He's an excellent coach."

Among those released Friday: Secondary/safeties coach Joe Baker, offensive line coach Larry Beightol, special teams coordinator John Bonamego, linebackers coach Mark Duffner, offensive coordinator Tom Rossley and strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin.

The team also released director of football administration Bruce Warwick and weight room assistant Vince Workman.

Four other Packers assistants had already left the team for new jobs.

I am liking the move because he has past here, was disliked by sherman, and because he is an offensive line specialist who is good with running game. He learnd some of that zone blocking the last couple years, and this move all but ensures us that our o-line will be good next year.

Indianapolis - Nearly 14 months have passed since Mike Sherman fired Packers tight ends coach Jeff Jagodzinski. Apparently time hasn't healed all wounds.


Jagodzinski has moved on to bigger and better things, recently being promoted to Atlanta Falcons' offensive line coach after serving as their tight ends coach in 2004. But at the NFL scouting combine here Thursday, Jagodzinski looked back, and took a few shots at his former boss.

"Coaching's fun again. And at the end, it wasn't in Green Bay," said Jagodzinski, a Wisconsin native who attended UW-Whitewater. "In Atlanta, your opinion matters. And the thing is nobody's afraid to make a suggestion. In Green Bay, a lot of guys bite their tongues on a lot of things.

"Right now, everybody's involved in the decision process, and your opinion matters. And if you're in an organization, you want to feel that you're a part of it. And when you don't have any decision-making responsibilities or they don't take your suggestions or whatever, that's frustrating. But that doesn't matter now."

Or does it?

In the past month, Green Bay watched receivers coach Ray Sherman make a lateral move to Tennessee and running backs coach Johnny Roland take the same job in New Orleans. Although Jagodzinski was miles away, the moves didn't surprise him.

"Why do you think those guys left?" he said. "It wasn't to go to a better team. It's because in Green Bay, your ideas don't get listened to."

Jagodzinski knows the best revenge is living well. And he's done just that, first helping Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler go to his second straight Pro Bowl in 2004, then being promoted this off-season.
"We saw things differently," Jagodzinski said of he and Sherman. "I didn't fit the way he wanted to do it and obviously I'm fitting better in Atlanta. I always enjoyed my time in Green Bay. From being there and growing up there, it was a real honor to be part of that organization.

"But the situation I've got right now, it's unbeatable. That's one of the reasons we're winning. And there's a reason (Falcons owner) Arthur (Blank) did so well in the Home Depot business. He's a people guy and he knows how to run an organization.

"Mike and I had different types of personalities, it was his decision, he's the boss and he's got to live with his decisions. But look at me now. How could things be any better?"

I like the guy. He seems like disliked shermans coaching style, that shermans opinion was the only one that mattered. thats ridiculous. At least give your coach some time to talk to you, even if you wont do a damn thing he suggests. But sherman had to spend his time wisely, like going to the combine:

But JJ helped mold alge crumpler into the TE he is, and THAT is impressive. Falcons O-line and TEs were good, so ill look for some more Martin action at the TE, or Bubba Franks if he can stay healthy.
