You guys think he's gonna get that huge money?
Babin won't be getting anywhere near what his contract number was.

Nobody will claim in on that contract.
Perhaps they'll renegotiate, but most likely he won't get claimed, and will be signing on much smaller short deal.

With a contender who needs a little pass rush help, which plenty of teams do.

You need around 2 mil of cap to claim Babs off waivers and you get him for the rest of the year

So you'd rather continue paying guys little money to get little to return? Such as Zombo Wilson etc... I understand the age thing but at some point we need more impact guys but we try and just draft guys which is fine Babin is a bigger impact guy than everyone on our defense not named Clay Matthews. (Especially our front 7)
Oline and pass rush are our biggest issues and if we continue to draft and develop our window with Aaron Rodgers shrinks every year.

We can't afford the contract, genius. Plus he's a 4-3 DE, not a 3-4 OLB, so he doesn't fit our scheme.

Only way this happens for us is if he clears waivers and is willing to take a team-friendly contract. Even then, his age, the timing and his lack of experience as an OLB are all knocks against him.

Scheme shmeme. Frank Zombo "fits" our scheme, doesn't make him a good football player Babin is better than most options we have on our own team. I think he will clear waivers.

I'm usually not one to jump on the name of a player. And I get the whole age argument. But, I tend to agree with Frank here. There's not a chance he gets claimed under his current contract. As a result, the likely situation is he signs with a contender looking to supplement its pass rush. Someone mentioned ATL and that is probably a pretty good fit for him there. But despite the fact he's old and a 4-3, nine-technique (whatever the hell that means) pass-rusher, I'd be willing to take a flyer on him for, or near, the veterans minimum. What's the worst that happens? He sucks and we lose out a few hundred thousand that really doesn't have cap ramifications. The upshot is maybe we get a guy that's fired up about being cut - humility does wonders for people - and Capers designs a few plays specifically to exploit his pass-rushing skills. He could be our down lineman in the Okie or whatever else Capers has up his sleeve. Bottom line, if the price is right, it wouldn't hurt to take the flyer.

Of course, with all that being said, I'd be absolutely shocked to see TT make this kind of move.

A nine technique is the position of the defensive player opposite the o-line. In a nine technique the end is split out real wide, outside a tight end.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I think he would make be a pretty good fit for us if we train him into our defense. I think he would bring a dimension to our defense that we are missing right now.

He is not old.....in my terms...lol.

He is 31 years old I beleive. Not that old. Considering that from 2010, 2011, and now part of 2012 he has totaled 36 sacks.....not to shabby.

He wont directly fit into our scheme, but there are downs and or plays that would fit his type of pass rush style. I doubt anyone will snatch him up under the waiver and pay his contract out. I bet someone does pick him up and pay him a tatste, kinda like what we paid Ced Benson.....then they would be getting a good deal. You never know, the guy might be hungry and or pissed off that he got cut and come out with a vengence. ???????

Sombody else like Seattle will sign him and he will end the year with 12 or 13 sacks. He will be just another player TT passes on who goes somewhere and becomes a stud for sombody else. Marshawn Lynch?

Oh the marshawn lynch comment. I remember the thinking among his supports, "we can't win without a RB! Lynch will take us to the promise land."
Cept we won the SB. Yeahhhhhh so much for the lynch argument

But lets talk about babin, how exactly would we use him in our system and by signing him you are saying we make the biggest offer to him and a long term contract for him right?

Not at all...just for this year unless he goes nut's. Use him as a pass rush specialist only.... like i've said fifty times. Sometimes guy's just need motivation and a change of venue (Charles woodson) to perform at a high level. Being in a venue full of history and tradition like Green Bay and being able to compete for a ring may be what Babin needs.

Ppl talk about winning the superbowl without lynch eh? so what we didn't need him to win the super bowl and? the point was we needed a running game to get there and before the playoff run no one knew about Starks and the production he would have during that run that's why ppl wanted Lynch.

Michael Lombardi said this morning that a team picking up Babin on waivers would have to pay him $2M for the rest of the season and Babin would become a UFA after this season. He thinks only playoff contending teams will be interested and he guessed no one would claim him on waivers. He mentioned New England and Atlanta as likely destinations for him.

ivo610 touched on this but Lombardi spelled it out: Babin was released because he's not giving 100%.

It struck me as ironic that the OP mentioned he could be the Packers' Kampman. Like Kampen, Babin is much more suited for the 4-3. What the Packers pass rush needs is the return of Matthews. When he comes back he'll help all the other pass rushers and the run D. IOW, the missing piece is Clay, not Babin.

BTW, the Eagles of 2011 can now be added to teams like the Redskins who went overboard on acquiring UFAs shooting for a "dream team" of talent. Their vaunted D finished 10 in scoring last season and is currently 24th. And of course they didn't even make the playoffs at 8-8 last year and are pitiful this season. Someone on the radio yesterday said the Eagles haven't won a game since the Phillies' last victory.

rodell330: That's right we didn't know if Starks would be a good enough RB to win a title. But in hindsight we know Thompson was right and those like you who viewed Lynch as the indispensible piece were wrong. But your post #40 more than infers Thompson was wrong not to sign Lynch in 2010, even though you were/are proven wrong on that point.

You cant teach a 4-3 DE to become a 3-4 OLB in the tail end of the season. It takes a year at minimum to teach him the system techniques, etc.... We saw how badly Kampmon transitioned to a 3-4.

Why would a player come to be a part time player in a system that is completely opposite of what he is used to and used for?

I have yet to see what's in it for him... Oh history and tradition? Do they take that at the clubs for payment?

He can't play end in a 3-4. I don't understand why people think he can be inserted into our defense
