Al Harris is and has been the real deal and is certainly one of the premeir cornerbacks in the league. Ted Thompson, don't be a fool. Renegotiate this guys contract and keep him here a few more years. He's worth whatever you pay him.

im still torn on this. Al is playing well, but hes getting older.

I'll let the GM do GM things, and ill do the fan thing where i root for the team and hope it all works out.

We've went over this in another thread, but we can do it all over again. It's a fun subject.

At the end of each year we have some extra cash we can't carry over to the next year. I say dump some of it on him and give him a more incentive laden contract, maybe?

I'd just sit down with Al, his agent and see what has to be done. If Al is requiring the paycheck Woodson's getting, I'd have to say, what team do you want to be traded to?
If he's willing to take a nice bonus with our leftover cash, incentive based contract, definetely get it done then.

I just don't want us to break the bank for another CB in his 30's. Don't get me wrong, I am glad we have Woodson, but from my ignorance on the contract, i think we paid a lil much for him.

Great post. Im a fan. I dont want to be concerned with how fat Al Harris's wallet gets. I wanna see him play well, bottom line. How many phat cars and phat houses he buys is of no concern to me. Its one of the main reasons why im starting to hate pro sports, especially baseball. No loyalty whatsoever to the team, the fans, the town, or the team tradition. For an extra 5 percent raise, most of these guys will jump ship and leave the team hanging. All my teams did this.

Shaq left orlando in the early 90's. Marlins championship teams were disasembled right after winning both world series. Im starting to not really like pro athletes all that much.

Its one of the reasons that Favre, Reggie White and Cal Ripken were my favorite players in their respective sports. They were loyal to their teams. Everything wasnt all about padding their bankroll. Do you see Favre after he negotiates a new contract. He comes to the press conference in workout shorts and a dirty tee shirt and its not a big deal. "Hey, we got it done" Each time he was the face of the league and he could have gotten much more but guys like that arent overly greedy and they honor their contract.

Three straight MVP's for Favre and he could have held the team ransom for obscene amounts but it didnt go down like that. Reggie White was the best defensive player in the league. Did they threaten to hold out?? Nope. Al Harris & Javon & McKenzie have a good year or 2 and they want to break the bank.

Im tired of hearing about T.O. and Ocho Cinco(Chad Johnson) type attitudes. Bunch of overpaid a**holes who dont care about the fans at all, have no loyalty to their teammates and if not for football probably couldnt hold a job at burger king.

Im starting to really hate all pro sports. And once Favre retires, im going to lose alot of interest in football. I'll still watch, but i wont care as much.

PAY HARRIS HIS MONEY. HE IS ONE OF THE BEST CBs IN THE NFL!!!!!!!!!
Don't mess this thing up. We have the best combo of CBs in the NFL. We could have a real good thing going for years to come. We have the cap room, give him his money. We all know how much you hate using free agency, so make Harris your free agent addition. Give him an extension.

Someone find out what the top 5 CB's are getting paid right now. Let's compare that to what Harris is making and we can make an educated discussion from there.

I hate doing the age thing with Harris all over again but we are talking about a guy who hasn't been a full time player for his entire career. He was playing a minor role for the Eagles his 1st couple of years. Much like Donald Driver did with the Packers before he became a starter. They might be 30 but they're bodies aren't worn down like most 30 year old football players. I think we need to keep him.

Woodson, Kampman, Green, Pickett, all agree that Ted hates F.A...

but Al isnt going to be a F.A this year or next year...

I like to know something...

Al signs a deal, then 2 years later or so, decides it isnt enuff money and wants a raise...So he goes public, complains about the contract he signed with Sherman...

So now Ted has a few choices, either ignore it, work something out or do a Walker thing..

But if he does the Walker way or ignores it, Ted is going to be looked at like a cheap azzz by SOME people..But yet these SAME people dont see Al as being the ***...

Why is that?

This is from 2005 so they may be a little off, but....

Highest-paid CBs as of last year

1. Chuck Woodson $10,537,000
2. Dre Bly $4,000,000
3. Ronde Barber $3,750,000
4. Sam Madison $3,420,000
5. Jerry Azumah $3,000,000
36. Al Harris $800,000

36. Al Harris $800,000

Then give him an incentive based contract. If he performs, makes Pro Bowls, etc., he can make what Bly and Barber are making, or perhaps a little bit more.

I like Harris. he's been solid. He deserves to get paid well.

According to the packerforum.com salary cap post http://www.packerforum.com/index.php?name=SalaryCap

Harris is being paid 1.5 million base salary. 1 million in easily attainable bonuses and he already received 875K in his signing bonus. Thats almost 3.4 million this year. Not too bad.

Before people go haywire about the $10 mil Wood made last year, keep in mind the hapless Raiders franchised him, twice--which was $8.25 in 04 and jumped to $10.5 in 05. Otherwise the going rate for top CBs is around $6 mil, though even that is foggy with signing bonuses, other bonuses, incentives, etc. Either way, with an aging vet, show him the money until he slows down, just keep the years low and everyone should be happy.

Should being the operative word...

Yeah Harris is worth more than a base salary of 1.5 mil. I hope they give him a raise but I also hope they don't overdue it. No doubt a deal can definitely be made and we have the room to make it work. I think raising his base salary some and giving him money up front would be fair and it would sure shut him up. I just don't see us getting anyone who is better than Al Harris at a cheaper price.

Also I hope most realize that Woodson's figure will significantly drop because this year was the year he signed the deal and he received a lot of money up front.

That's the most important thought about signing Harris, who better for cheaper? I think thats what got us beat with Wahle. I think we felt we'd get as good or better for cheaper.

i agree that we should make harris one of the top paid CB's in the league after this year. he deserves it, we need him. but i can't believe nobody jumped all over tromadz for saying that he would be the fan and leave all the decisions to the gm instead of speculating on what the team should do. nobody else thought that was funny?!

Why cant anyone answer this question?

you sign a contract then whine and complain about 2 years later it isnt good enuff KNOWING that said contract is probably going to be on the low end in a few years..

then when a gm refuses to redo the contract he is looked like a screw up or a tight ***, but yet the player is all most glorified?

I don't. I think and I can't speak for Ted Thompson but from what I heard and read. Green Bay wanted to clear as much cap space as they could and do to that they had to get rid of 2 key players. Wahle and Sharper.

I think this situation is different. We have more than enough room to pay Harris. Harris could sign the biggest contract in history for a CB and we'd still have plenty of cap room to spend afterwards.

Not saying to pay him that much but my point being Green Bay has a lot more money to work with.

Though I don't like the argument it is completely and logically correct.

NFL Contracts aren't guaranteed. If Ted Thompson doesn't have to honor the contract then why should Al Harris?

Frankly it works both ways. I have no problems with someone wanting more money especially when they’ve proven year after year they deserve a raise. I think they need to take a good approach. Harris in my opinion has taken a good approach where as someone like Javon Walker wanted the spotlight.
