ILB Brandon Marshall.

"Marshall will earn $2.553 million on the tender. It is a bit surprising he was not tendered at the highest level, but the cap-strapped Broncos are gambling no other team will be willing to part with a second-round pick." What about Marshall? He sure played on a great defense. I admit I don't know much about him. His salary is not prohibitive. We could offer more and see what Denver does. I doubt we find an ILB in the 2nd round.

I'd give up a second rounder for him. He is a known quantity. However, if we sign Danny Trevathan we wont have to give up any picks.

I would be excited if Brandon Marshall ends up in Green Bay but I don´t see the Broncos not matching any offer sheet the Packers would sign him to, especially as we don´t have the cap space to front load the deal.

Considering Marshall would probably be better then any guy you find in the second round, I don't have a problem losing the draft pick, but I am guessing the money Marshall will be offered by Denver or other teams, will price the Packers out of the picture.

Well, with the Broncos applying the second-round tender to Marshall they can stay put for now as long as no other team signs him to an offer sheet. It would take a significant offer sheet for Denver not to match it though so I don't think a lot of teams will make such an offer and be willed to lose a second-rounder as well.

Denver is at or near the bottom for the least amount of cap space available of the 32 NFL teams, AND they need to re-sign M. Jackson AND find a starting QB. Why couldn't an offer sheet for B. Marshall be made that they couldn't match? Both Marshall and Trevathan have injury histories, and Marshall just had foot surgery (again) to remove some screws... but he IS the better ILB of the 2. I'd give-up a 2nd rounder for him and he'd likely be cheaper than Trevathan on the open market.

I like Marshall, but there are players you can go after that wouldn't require you to part with a second-round pick. Ted covets those, so this seems unlikely.

I expect the Broncos to sign Von Miller to a long-term contract before they have to make a decision on Marshall freeing up additional cap space for this season. As I've mentioned above the Packers don't have enough cap space to front load a deal making it more difficult for the Broncos to match it.

I'll say this much. If a team makes a push for Marshall (and Trevathan), it'll be in the first week of Free Agency. So if TT/MM are looking to sign one of those two guys, it'll have to be in that first week. Neither one will stay on the board longer than a week. I truly hope we are aggressive with bringing in an ILB.

Rodney at Packers Notes has a post up today in which he mentions 26-year-old Zach Brown and 25-year-old Tahir Whitehead has potential bargains as cover-only ILBs. I believe Brown has been mentioned before but I don't think Whitehead has.

Whitehead truly is an intriguing option who's capable of playing all three downs. There's no doubt that Brown would be an upgrade as a coverage linebacker but with him struggling defending the run I would only feel comfortable with him being the lone linebacker in the dime.

I'd rather have a legit 3 down ILB than just a pass defense specialist.

Oh h*ll yes! But the chances of Thompson entering a bidding war for a player like Trevathan are remote (unless McCarthy was serious about shocking us). So a true cover LB, even though not ideal I'd categorize as better than the status quo.

Legit question, as I know next to nothing about other teams. How many legit 3-down ILBs are out there now?

There are at least a dozen inside linebackers that are legitimately capable of playing three downs. With Freeman, Johnson, Trevathan and Whitehead four of them are headed to become unrestricted free agents tomorrow.

OK, so about every third team has one? Just wondering, when people ask for one here, how common they are. Thanks.
