The Green Bay Packers have signed rookie defensive tackle Justin Harrell, the team's first-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signing Friday.

Harrell, a 6-foot-4, 310-pound player from Tennessee, was a four-year letterman and defensive captain in 2006. He became the last Tennessee player to wear Reggie White's No. 92.

In 35 career games, including 25 starts, Harrell tallied 82 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions. He earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors in 2005 before injuries limited his senior season to three games.

Harrell is the final of 11 draft picks to sign with the Packers. All rookies will take the field Saturday when the team opens training camp at 2 p.m.

GBPG reports it's a 5 year deal, with financial terms undisclosed.

Good job by Brandt, getting the picks essentially on time.

Now only thing left is to have Harrell cleared by the docs to participate in contact practices (the first of which is tomorrow at 2PM). Here's hoping! :cross:

God I hope he clears. That would be a bad year to start the year.

Anyways, great news! I can't wait for this year to start.

Re: Harrell signed

Was there ever a doubt?
There's always some bad cheez that dones a negative perception about it from time to time.

Me? Not really. I wasn't overly concerned either. I can't remember a draft pick holding out for an extended amount of time. I think T Buck did?

Yeah T-Buck didn't suit up until the third game of the regular season. That's the last pick I remember to hold out for an extended period of time. I remember in his first game as a punt returner that T-Buck took it to the house lol. I guess that WASN'T a sign of things to come eh?

Here's the details of the deal: ESPN Story

The Green Bay Packers reached a contract agreement late Friday night with first-round draft pick Justin Harrell, the former University of Tennessee defensive tackle who their coaches feel can be a dominating interior player, ESPN.com has learned.

Harrell will sign a six-year contract that voids to five seasons if he reaches certain playing time levels, agent Eugene Parker confirmed. The deal has a maximum value of just under $15 million and slightly more than $8 million in guarantees.

Parker, who wrapped up the negotiations just before midnight, and following a long day of bargaining, lauded the professionalism and creativity of Green Bay vice president Andrew Brandt in helping craft the deal. "He deserves a lot of credit," Parker said.

Green Bay officials were criticized by some of their fans for the selection of Harrell with the 16th overall pick in April, with many feeling that the Packers should have opted instead for a running back in that slot. But Harrell is a player whose stock rose dramatically in the weeks leading up to the draft, and he is a player with a tremendous upside.

The concerns about Harrell, a standout tight end and basketball forward in high school, come from the fact he missed considerable time because of injuries during his Vols' career.

Two major setbacks, a broken right ankle that required surgery in 2003 and a torn bicep that limited him to just three games in 2006, marred his college career. Most talent evaluators felt that, without issues about his durability, Harrell might have been a top 10 selection.

Because of the injuries, Harrell appeared in just 35 games in four seasons. He registered 85 tackles and four sacks.

Harrell has very good size (6-feet-4 ½, 300 pounds), but can probably afford to add more weight to his frame. Surprisingly fluid for his size, Harrell can be a disruptive defender for stretches of games, but probably needs to develop more consistency. He is expected to be a part of the Packers' tackle rotation as a rookie.

Basically, 5 year deal if he plays regularly, 6 if not. Just over $8m guaranteed, and a max value of $15m. Not bad, supposing he plays. :cross:

Any chance of playing both ways in goal line situations? A 6-4 1/2 300 pound TE would be a BIG target in the end zone.

I'm probably wrong but I expected a higher price for him. I wonder how much of the rookie cap Brandt used and how much of our total cap is left. Probably at least $10mil of the latter. Anybody know?

BTW, and of extreme importance of course, let's keep our fingers and toes crossed (gonna be hard to walk straight) that he is cleared to practice. And absolutely NO (repeat NO!) cut blocks on him in practice. Save that for the darned Eagles.

Good for Harrell and the Packers...now there's nothing left but to win over the fans by making plays. It sucked that this kid got a negative reaction from the fans when he was drafted. It wasn't his fault and we might all applaud TT for making this pick after we find out what we have in Harrell.

<edit> OK, some wouldn't applaud Thompson for this pick if he went to Pro Bowl after Pro Bowl.

A running back? Who wanted a running back, considering that Lynch was already gone by the time the Packers drafted? Sometimes these sportswriters just make stuff up.

Anyway, it's great to have all the new players signed on time. I didn't think Harrell was the type to hold out.

I agree. I would add that I think Harrell has a chip on his shoulder of the nature of "I'm gonna show you I was worth this pick!" ... he has that quiet nature to him so far. Thinking more about it, Jamaal Reynolds had the same demeanor... ****.

Anyhow, I hope Harrell blows some OL up and slams the **** out of some RB and QB's.

I wonder if Harrell and Co. turn out to be studs if fans will still ***** about more than half of the picks made by Thompson every draft.

I think some people on this forum would and I don't think we're one of them.

Looks like all the hand wringing some were doing a few weeks ago about us not getting our picks signed was wasted.
Just like i said it was at the time.
