The unique ownership structure, five stock sales to bring in money, George Halas helping out at some point, the fire at Rockwood Lodge etc...

The people of the community wanted it and stepped up to save it. Plus they never let a single greedy individual get possession of the franchise.

But even with all that it was Lombardi who saved its bacon. The league owners were actively seeking ways to close down the Green Bay franchise in the 1950's. But after Lombardi made them the NFL's crown jewel how could they?

Tonawanda.
The Tonawanda Kardex Lumberman folded after one game in the NFL in 1921 (franchise fee: $50) against the Rochester Jeffersons, losing 45 - 0.

I think it was Johnny Blood getting his brains knocked by the Packers when Blood played for the Duluth Eskimos and Pottsville Maroons from 1926 to 28. He regained his senses and joined the Packers in 1929 and the Championships started rolling in. The rest is history.

I think Lombardi played a big role. I had seen a documentary last year and in it they talked about Lombardi telling his wife that he wants to coach in GB and the wife was like "where is that?" they grab a map and GB was not on the map, and Lombardi said that when he is done he will make sure GB is on the map, that along with superbowl 1 which gave it national coverage put GB on the map. But I guess there may not be one right answer, since they still describe GB as an anomaly today, since professional teams dont survive in small markets, GB being the exception.

In a way GB is no longer a small market, it has evolve for many to represent Wisc. So if you think of it as the States team, it is in a bigger market, not just limited to GB. An analogy might be the Toronto Blue jays, while Toronto is a big market, the Blues jays have a larger support group than just Toronto bc other provinces support them bc it is Canadas only baseball team.

I think the Packers popularity took off in the 60's, the combination of the quality Lombardi teams and an increase in TV viewd games nationally. I believe the Packers are in the top five of nationally and world followed teams.

The popularity was there well before the 1960s, at least in Wisconsin. Look back at when they would pack trains to travel down to Chicago for the games back during Curly's days. You are correct that their national popularity skyrocketed with Lombardi, the Packers sweep, and the first Super Bowls.

She's just window dressing, unless she can cook good brats, brew her own beer and bring them to me along with cheese on plate while I watch the game. ;)
