Just read on ProFootballTalk.com that, because Grady took an advance of $65,000 on his 2005 salary, he cannot renegotiate this years compensation, per the CBA. The only option is an extension...which will not change his salary for this season. He can add money to the 2nd or 3rd years, but his salary this year is locked in.

Given that an established veteran has to beg for a $65,000 advance, it is quite apparent that ol' Grady pissed away his career earnings and is looking to make it up with his new contract demands. So, in spite of his talent, do you think the Packers are going to pony up the dough to a guy who is 32, overweight, and blodding around on bad wheels? Let us not even mention his reputation of being a malcontent after a few years at any locale he has visited in his career...ala Sam Cassell.

Clearly, the Packers have the leverage in this situation...the guy needs dough bad. Have him play the year or sit, and if there is anything left of his game following the season, consider a one year deal for 2006 or let him roll on outta town.

Getting tired of this contract crap.

Good point digs...but I'm sure what he will be asking for is an extension and along with that extension is the almighty............drum roll.............signing bonus!

or they can call Grady's bluff, he can sit out...and the Packer's can have a pourous DL AGAIN!...where other teams will roll up the yards and the touchdowns...and the Pack will be in the same boat they've been in the past few years....1 and done in the playoffs....because the offense can't score more than the defense allows...

the chickens are coming home to roost...

by Mike Sherman's incompetence in his GM role, and by overpaying loads like JJ and HUnt..among others, real contributors like Grady, and others on the team are being shafted. This team may be in for a world of hurt because Sherman didn't take care of it's defensive needs, and hired his cronies, like Slowick and Rossley to pi$$ away the remaining years that Brett has left.

The nfl and the player's union really have to get a handle on this, because there are real inequities built into this system...

This just in, Mike Sherman is responsible for the US deficit, unemployment, global warming (assuming it's not a myth), the conflict in Israel and high gas prices.

dighthepack and toppackerfan, the bottom line to what Pack66 is saying is that Mike Sherman as GM has made some blunderous errors that have put this team squarely behind the 8 ball. Now you can't give Grady a big raise because he's injured too often and he only plays 38% of the plays. When he plays he is totally effective and I'd love to have him, but you can't allow your players to hold up your team. You only have limited dollars to spend because of the salary cap and so the GM has to decide who to give the big money too. He did give big money to Hunt, JJ, and KGB, of those 3 KGB is the only one who has kind of played big even though he's only a one dimensional player. So that doesn't leave a whole lot of money for Grady or Javon. What has happened with GM Sherman is that he has drafted poorly has very little depth on his team and he gave away the bank to players who don't produce. So as much as you may like Mike, the bottom line is that he has put this team in a dire straights. The way he handled the McKenzie situation last year has come back to haunt him now with both Grady and Javon. The best thing Thompson can do is the bite the bullet and say no, so that the message that will be sent is that players who play like big money players will get the big money and the rest of you will have to take what is left.

I know what he's saying. He's been saying it for years. He'll eventually be right, but I don't think it's this year.

We'll also see how bad a GM MS was this season when players from his two previous drafts come in and contribute in a big way. The D will be better and this season it will be Mike Sherman's draft picks from the last two seasons who will provide the help.

On to #13!

I am certainly no Sherman apologist, if you have read my takes on him, you surely know this. I am just hoping that MS, minus the GM duties, can rededicate himself to coaching and avoid the serious blunders that have occurred under his watch during games. First and best move was to strip Tom Rossley of playcalling duties. While the guy can put together pretty decent gameplans, he is CLEARLY incapable of pulling the trigger on his plans during game situations.

As GM, Sherman had many hits, many misses, and, some major headscratchers concerning his willingness to throw picks away on players that never did squat. Let us not even delve into how he let Hunter Hillenmeyer go when we needed LBs badly, or running with 2 punters last year to cover his ***. MS the GM picked the players MS the coach needed...often tothe detriment of the overall good of the team.

Most blatantly, however, Sherman failed to understand how to operate in the era of unrestricted free agency. He operated under the old model of "signing our own" which provided hefty raises for many players and put us in bad cap situations. He needed to understand that any team can realistically have only 3-5 players maxed out, paywise. The rest of the roster must turn over fairly frequently to maintain cap health, and remain viable contenders for specifically targeted free agents that could actually make a difference.

I think Thompson is a breath of pragmatic air that was sorely lacking where personnel decisions were/are concerned.

I will freely avoid comment on that matter as to uphold the "no politics" nature of this forum. That being said, we will surely have much to discuss at August camp...over beers, of course!

now, for the Grady situation...the packers and others should distribute the money so there is a way to reward players playing above their contracts..not a total restructuring per se, but like a bonus...for Christmas...

The Denver Broncos had no problem restructuring Terrell Davis' contract when they saw what they had.

Did you not get the part, "despite his talent", Chase? Grady is a very talented player, who IS 32, IS overweight, and IS plodding around on bad wheels. You have to measure the good vs. the bad...and we cannot argue that his demands, and paying a declining player more money for future declining performance has to be part of that consideration, and would fall on the "bad" side of things.

Is your whole purpose in life to live it as one perpetual pissing match, Chase?

ok digs,

but who do you get to replace him....you are making a HUGE assumption that Grady doesn't have 2-3 good years left in him...and you the question still is who do you replace him with....

people were calling for Gilbert's head 2-3 years before he was ready to go...and he provided quality assurance on the DL....

you can't just throw somebody with talent out that still has something left....and replace him with a nobody

What the players and apparently the agents are failing to see is that Teams are maxed on the cap and don't have the cash these primadonnas want. In March you might of had a chance to get some dough as a FA etc...but now, no way. This time a year count your blessings you're with a team and not being offered the minimum just so you can play this year. Look at some of the FA's on the block right now...there'll be a fire sale on alot of talent just before camps start. Sorry Grady, you've got to stick with what you've got because no one will pay you more...that fear is gone.

I'm not so sure about that. MS played hardball, and yes, he traded him like MM SAID he wanted, but really, he just wanted more $$$, why else would he be holding out down in N.O. right now? So MS never caved into what MM REALLY wanted.

W/ Javon and Grady, they just took some bad advice that said Drew is a good way to get some extra $$$. They're going to learn the hard way though, just like MM.

"Joanna" was sweetest, nicest, most innocent girl until she slept with LUMBERG! "my unholy pig of a boss who represents all that is souless and wrong with the world."

Part of the appeal of Grady was that he was a selfless blue collar hard worker. You jeapordize/taint what was your main appeal, and yeah, ppl won't like you too much anymore.

You Sherman butt kissers change your stories depending upon what your needs are for that day.

Last season Javon Walker was the greatest WR in NFL history and when he asks for more money, now he's bad news.

2 weeks ago Grady Jackson was going to lead the Packer defense to a great season and now that he wants more money, he is bad news.

The list goes on and on....

What don't all you Sherman butt kissers get together and come up with a story and stick to it.

I guess you haven't been reading Brucey boy's posts P@ck66, the Packers are loaded on defense.

Cullen Jenkins, James Lee or Donnell Washington will step right in for Grady Jackson.

.

Is it really surprising to you that the public's opinion of a player changes if their character dramatically changes? These 2 were once selfless, team-first players, but then Rosenhaus rolls around, and of course ppl's opinions change.
