With the Packers already ruling running back Ryan Grant out for their Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills, the Packers will insert fourth-year man Brandon Jackson into their starting backfield.
Jackson took over for Grant in Week 1 after a sprained right ankle knocked Grant out of the game. Jackson ran for 63 yards on 18 carries (3.5 yards per carry) and caught two passes for 12 yards.
Jackson has been used as a third-down back to spell Grant up until this point in his career. He is better in pass protection out of the backfield and is also a good receiver out of the backfield, catching 69 receptions in his career to Grant's 73 receptions in much more limited time.
Jackson has a better yards per catch average than Grant (7.4 to 6.3) so that should see Jackson catching a few more balls out of the backfield from Aaron Rodgers at the cost of a few running plays.
In his career, has never had more than 75 carries in a season, and has only cracked double-digit carries, six times in 37 games. He entered his rookie season of 2007 in the mix for the starting job, before a shin injury cost him several games and Grant took the starting job and ran with it.
Injuries to his shin, ankle and wrist have caused Jackson to miss 12 games over his first three years.
Jackson also draws a very favorable matchup in Week 2, home against the Buffalo Bills. Against the Dolphins last week, the Bills allowed 132 yards rushing and have already lost one of their key defensive players, linebacker Paul Posluszny, for the game this week with a knee injury.
Jackson should help the Packers keep a nice run-pass balance in Week 2, and give how quickly the Packers ruled Grant out, this could be a serious injury that leads to significant time as featured back for Jackson.
