    Rants and raves
Barnett has impact play with interception

RAVE: Nick Barnett’s interception and 95-yard touchdown return is the type of impact play that stirs Pro Bowl consideration. The third-year linebacker came into the Saints game with a team-high 35 tackles, but he had no sacks, interceptions or fumbles forced. Barnett’s highlight reel play is the kind that draws league-wide attention. It also is the kind of play that separates the average from the good, and the good from the great.

RANT: Antonio Chatman is a serviceable No. 3 receiver on a team in desperate need of it, but his absolute lack of explosiveness as a punt return man is growing more irritating with every fair catch. The Packers can’t settle for mediocrity in the return game. Field position is too valuable. There must be a better alternative.

RAVE: The Packers’ offensive coaching staff concocted a game plan that was simple but effective. Instead of burying players beneath an avalanche of details, the coaches emphasized execution and clearly defined the players’ roles. They played to running back Tony Fisher’s strength — his pass catching — and he responded with six catches for 40 yards. They got tight end Donald Lee a favorable matchup and he responded with a nifty 26-yard touchdown catch. They scaled back on the U-71 package in favor of double-tight end sets utilizing David Martin’s and Lee’s strength (receiving).

RANT: Right tackle Mark Tauscher finally got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He was flagged for the first holding penalty of his six-year NFL career.

    • • •

RANT: The New Orleans Saints quit on Sunday. They made the same mistakes the Packers made during their four-game losing streak. The difference was the Saints gave up when they trailed 21-3 in the first half. The Packers didn’t quit in any of their four losses to open the season.

    • • •

RAVE: Grady Jackson and the Packers’ defensive line shut down Deuce McAllister, the league’s highest-paid running back, with surprising force. McAllister had 11 carries for 31 yards before leaving with a knee injury. Coordinator Jim Bates’ defense shut down the run, forced turnovers and scored two touchdowns for good measure.

RANT: Why does it seem like the Packers have to be almost dead and buried before coach Mike Sherman gains control of the situation? The Packers’ 52-3 victory over the Saints was impressive and desperately needed, but it also makes one wonder what might’ve been if the Packers had been better prepared at the season’s start.

I always knew Tauscher was real clean with the holds, but had not idea he had never had one against him in his entire career until yesterday. IMPRESSIVE!!!

Tauscher's holding penalty seemed to be a totally bogus call at the time. haven't reviewed it yet

Yeah, it was a pretty weak call.
