The Packers got rid off weight machines that you might see in a fitness club and have gone to free weights(barbells and dumbells).
I did not think the Packers were silly enough to have these machines around. Now you know why the weightroom guys were fired.
The free weights force the lifter to use nearby muscle group to stabilize the weight while the primary muscle is exercising. It helps ensure that minor muscle groups are not overlooked and will reduce the pressures exerted on ligaments during gametime collisions.
My Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, explains why this is a superior method of training in several of his books( I own only one).
While there may be a minor injury early, especially amongst those who avoid doing their off season training at the team facilities, those who use this method are less likely to be injured during the season. I think it is a concept that should have been adapted long ago.
This is the first positive I can put in the McCarthy column when evaluating him as a coach.
