Jets quarterback Brett Favre sat down with some reporters in New York today and detailed the talks he had this off-season with Packers General Manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy.

It’s clear that Favre doesn’t have warm memories of either, especially Thompson.

In an amusing portion of his interview with the New York Post, Favre talks about the visit that Thompson made to his Mississippi home after the NFL draft. Favre said he thought they were going to talk about him potentially coming back, but instead they talked about an odd offer that Thompson made.

“Then he kind of gets quiet,” Favre said, recalling what Thompson said to him, “and says, ‘We want to do something special for you, and what do you think if we …’ and these were his words exactly, ‘dismantle your locker and send it to you.’

“I was like, ‘What the hell are you talking about?’ I was like, ‘Um, OK Ted, great.’

“He said, ‘It’s going to be your locker, we’ll send it to you. Now, it’s going to be in a box.’

“I’m thinking, ‘Way to get my *** out the door.’ That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of. What the hell am I going to do with a locker? So I just said, ‘Oh, OK, Ted, that’s great.’”

Favre also recounted his conversations with McCarthy, saying to the New York Daily News that when he first told the Packers’ coach of his intention to return, the response was: “Oh, God, Brett, you’re putting us in a tight spot.”

And Favre, to this day, isn’t sure why McCarthy thinks that — because Favre still thinks he would have been better for the Packers this season than Aaron Rodgers.
“I think Aaron Rodgers will do a real good job, barring injury,” Favre said, “but if you’re a betting man and said, ‘Who gives us the best chance to win right now?’ … This isn’t bragging, but I think I would. Aaron may play great, and they’ll look like geniuses, but to not welcome me back … I just assumed it was the fear of upsetting Aaron, not only now but in the future. To me, that’s ridiculous, totally ridiculous.”

Because Favre is calling as he sees it, Thompson is a straight up @$$ and this year will prove what he did wrong. I am all about a HOF stepping aside when the times comes and they are justing holding on to hold on, but Favre has some left in the tank and to get run out of town the way he did by Thompson was wrong. I do agree Favre try to prolong in making a decision, but still the man couldve still be the man in GB. Thompson is a control plain and simple and with Brett not here it helps Thompson to get out of bed in the morning

Again and again, and again after saying it's over. And probably he'll "call it as he sees it" at the end of the season too.

The decision has been made, it's all done and dusted. Let it go, this bickering helps no one. Brett, go plan against the Dolphins and prove that TT made a mistake in letting you go; don't go to some reporter and claim that you're the better option (no arrogance intended).

Really? Favre can't move on and keep his mouth shut?

The PACKERS, not ted thompson, decide to do this classy thing and give Favre the locker(they coulda put Lumkin in there or something, that wouldn't have been disrespectful at all....) and he *****es?

And he can't see why McCarthy said brett put him in a 'tight spot'? Is he insane or just stupid? Even super man love favre-supporters can see the tight spot he put the PACKERS in.

Just play for the Jets and shut your ****** mouth. And try not to get hurt in week 2 vs. the patriots.

grow up Favre.

I love this: “I’m thinking, ‘Way to get my *** out the door.’ That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of. What the hell am I going to do with a locker? So I just said, ‘Oh, OK, Ted, that’s great.’”

What hes thinking, and what he says. two different things. well, *******, maybe if you told people what you were thinking and did things the right way, this wouldnt be a problem. Instead you play mind games and play coy with the media so they beg for you to come back. For such a straight shooter you sure do a lot of double talk.

I cant believe he admits to thinking and saying two entirely different things and then blabs about it later to the press trying to make someone else look bad. and he wonders why no one wants him around here.

I don't think you can deny that ted didn't want Favre back. He never really made big attempts to keep him and by all rights he shouldn't have too. But to go out to the media and start complaining now about him isn't necessary

it had to be hard for Brett ... i also feel Brett was pushed aside .... i dont agree with the way TT handled this at all .... i mean we all have a sour tast in our mouth after this whole thing ... weather you agree or disagree with Brett or TT ... the whole thing could have been settled in a quiet manner ... now the olny reason i dont agree with TT ,, is the fact Brett is a packer ... he played his @ZZ off for the packers ... so there is a passion there ... he had done his job ,, and done well the last 16 seasons ... i understand why he feels double crossed ... that being said what is done is done ... time to move on ... Rodgers is the new guy in title town ...Brett played ball well for the pack ... i wish him well ... and i will always remember Brett number 4 a green bay packer ...

Frankly, I don't think I would ever turn on Brett the way many have. He played through pain and did many good things to help the Packers win. While Brett was the starter the packers had the best win/loss record in the NFL.

If nothing else can some of you wish Brett well and hope that he succeeds greatly with Jets just for the better draft pick the Packers will receive??

The Packers will need a quality CB, OT, and DT next year in addition to the usual depth they draft.
Having an extra 2nd round pick would be very helpful.

Re: Favre: Thompson wanted my *** out of the door.

People should read the full interview in the New York paper's. The ProFootballTalk summary does not do the story justice.

Favre's description of the meeting with Thompson is very revealing. It confirms, in a painful way, what we all know from Thompson's public appearances: Thompson is a horrible communicator. The locker gesture was a classy one, if presented in the right way. But Thompson completely blew the presentation to Favre. I can think of a great speech I could give to Favre in telling him why the franchise wanted to give him the locker. But as Favre tells the story, Thompson basically offered two sentences: "Brett, we are going to dismantle your locker and send it to you. It will come in a box." And Favre also talks about how ackward Thompson was while at Favre's house. Favre said Thompson barely talked, that he had to initiate all of the conversation.

Thompson's failure to communicate effectively, probably more than anything else, explains the Favre Debacle. Ron Wolf was a great communicator. Gruff, but effective. Mike Sherman also was a great communicator. Sherman could have had tears flowing down Favre's cheeks in explaining to Favre why the Packers wanted to give Favre his Lambeau locker. If Wolf or Sherman were the GM, the Favre situation would not have become such a mess.

Favre is gone, so our primary interest in the story should not be what it says about Favre. Our concern is the Packers, and the revelations in the interview highlight that our GM still has a long ways to go in terms of professional growth. He can pick great players in the draft, but he has problems talking to the players once they are on the team. Perhaps Thompson believes that is McCarthy's job. But players raved about how they felt they could always go talk to Wolf.

Also, Favre did not call a reporter so he could tell his side of the story. New York beat writers asked Favre for an interview and Favre agreed to it. The reporters then asked him about his split with the Packers, among many other things. And Favre decided to answer the questions, probably to help develop a better relationship with the New York media.

Favre said nothing new in this interview with the new york media, he's just re-hashing his tired TT hates me crap. If any one of you thinks he isn't bitter that his power play got snubbed you're kidding yourself.

Re: Favre: Thompson wanted my *** out of the door.

Truman, what about Favres inability to communicate without a TV in front of his face?

If Favre would have been a man about any of this, It wouldnt have happened. thats all there is to it. Instead he was a punk. You can blame it on TT's awkwardness all you want. But the fact is, if Favre at any point since the Giants game last year, would have stepped up and been a man about his decision or his comments. This would not be an issue.

He was a baby about it all, and now hes playing for a strange team. All Favres fault. unless of course you consider it the Packers fault for not giving Favre his daily phone call to reassure him that he could play for the Packers.

and our primary interest should be about Favre constantly feeling like he has to trash the Packers name to make himself look better. This is TO ****, this is Javon Walker ****. If anyone has a huge ego that needs checking, its Brett Lorenzo Favre. and as far as your comment about TT having trouble communicating with players on the team. Really? cause i sure havent heard about it. Thompson has had trouble communicating with 2 players so far.... Javon Walker and Brett. that says a lot in my opinion. two prima donnas that thought they were above the team... and no one is bigger than the Packers.

You know, regardless of who was most wrong in this situation (personally I think both Thompson and Favre are self-centered jerks) it's painful to watch Brett continue to dwell on it. It's kind of like a buddy of mine who's wife divorced him 5-years ago, get a beer in him and it's all he can talk about.

Until Brett can learn to decline comment when asked about his departure from Green Bay, the media will continue to ask him about it because it makes for good news copy. He needs to grow up, get over it, and learn to just say "No".

Why didn't Brett tell TT he wanted to play again when TT came for that visit? It is looking more and more that there were breakdowns on communication on both ends here. Of course if I even hint that Brett made mistakes in this mess I'm labelled a Favre hater. :(

Re: Favre: Thompson wanted my *** out of the door.

the ****ipedia link was hilarious, esp. the madden man-crush insinuation.

You said it well Lare, and good divorce analogy...both TT and Brett are at fault, but it's water under the bridge now so let it die. It's so sad to see him still crying about this and suggests a lot of his previous drama queen moments were calculated attempts to get the media and fans to reminisce, beg him to come back, and shower him with praise.

Re: Favre: Thompson wanted my *** out of the door.

Sounds like Favre is'nt happy yet. Isn't he the one who wanted to be traded? Rumor going around is Favre had his own private shower room in Green Bay. True or untrue?? If so that's special treatment. How would teammates react to such special treatment. You become above the team. Could the I'm above the Green Bay Packers be reasons TT wanted to move on? His comments that he didn"t "mingle" with teammatrs due to his advanced age. I've been to many practices over the years and Favre always snuck out the back gate, jumped in a van and was escorted to "his locker". Didn't mingle with who actually counted, THE FANS. Who called out Javon Walker during his contract dispute? Oh yeah Brett Favre. Who commented that it was't his job to coach Rogers. Oh yeah Brett Favre. If we as fans could only see how he treated Rogers in his first couple of years I think we'd be shocked. I was your no. 1 fan. Now my feelings are hurt. Gee, who do I sound like now? Good luck and good rid.... oh forget it. GO PACK win or lose ...a fan forever.

Re: Favre: Thompson wanted my *** out of the door.

I just love how the fans who hate the Packers now because of the Favre saga and now hate TT always say "Favre has done so much for the team"....it's never the other way around, what about everything the Packers gave to Favre?

I'm not a Favre hater, I loved Favre when he was a Packer and still love Favre, i just think there is a lot of fault on his part with how this whole situation played out. I'm a Packers fan before i'm a Brett Favre fan. I just want him to shut his mouth and play.

I look forward to the Aaron Rodgers era
