Farve in reach of records

If Brett Favre has a typical Brett Favre season now that he’s decided to return for 2006, he almost certainly will break some of the NFL’s greatest passing records.
Favre, who reportedly told the Packers on Tuesday he intends to play this season, will need to throw 25 touchdown passes — something he has done four times in the last five seasons — to break Dan Marino’s league record of 420. With four more touchdown passes, he will join Marino as the only other quarterback in NFL history to throw 400 touchdown passes.
In his 16th NFL season, Favre also will need 290 completions to surpass Marino, the league’s all-time completion leader (4,967) and 322 completions to become the first player in NFL history to reach 5,000.
He will enter the season with his quarterback-record streak of 221 consecutive starts intact. He needs to start the Packers’ first eight games to tie Bruce Matthews (229 straight starts) for No. 3 on the all-time list regardless of position.
If Favre were to lead the league in touchdown passes, it would be his fifth time doing so and would establish a league record. With four, he’s tied with Johnny Unitas, Len Dawson and Steve Young.
Favre remains the only player in league history to win three NFL MVP awards. He won them in consecutive years (1995-97).
No matter what Favre does this season, his place in history almost certainly has been cemented.
