Does anyone think Packers will sign Hester to be the primary returner/6th WR?
He is 31 which is a bit old for TT but he did average 27.6 on kickoffs and 14.2 on punts ranking 6th and 4th in the league respectively. He would keep Cobb off special teams while keeping the threat to score every time he touches the ball vibe alive for the special teams unit. He should also command a very modest contract, I'm guessing max 2 mil per year with very little guaranteed.
Or would you rather TT find a return specialist in the draft, for example Dri Archer 5-8 173 4.26 40?

I'd be ok with this. Anything that takes Cobb off of special teams (assuming that anyone brought in is a better option) I'm all for. He's too valuable to the offense to risk getting hurt on special teams.

These things are all about roster spots. I'm also not convinced that Hester would even be any better as I think our special teams blocking sucks. They always say that a return man's job is to beat one guy and the rest should be blocked. Having watched the Bears and Hester on returns, I think they block much better.

No. I think he is on the decline, so not sure what we can expect going forward. He was never much of a WR. Would much rather find a young WR who could handle the duties and maybe develop into a quality WR or DB.

But you have to think Jonathan Franklin sees the writing on the wall with Lacy, Harris and maybe Starks and sees that he needs to play on special teams. If he's smart he's working on catching punts and kicks five days a week.

I rather the Packers draft young legs for the Job. A 4.26 40 yard dash would be a perfect addition to our special teams... If he doesn't have butter fingers.

Hester is going to be a buy low candidate this offseason. He might be able to be had for a little over the veteran minimum. At that price, he'd be a good pickup.

Heck yeah, sign Hester. This keeps Cobb off special teams to for less snaps and more injury possibilities. Plus Hester is a great return man. I doubt he'll demand a lot of money because its all he is, a return specialist.

I'm willing to give him a try as a return man/5th WR, but at this point, I can't help but wonder if our coverage and return teams have a lot to do with it.

Nonetheless I'd like to have an experienced and reliable return man like this. I'm more concerned with ball security and not making the return game an adventure than seeking big plays on ST.

Hester can field a kick return all day, but when it comes to catching a pass...... HELL NO..... he couldn't catch an STD in a ***** house with a fist full of 100 dollar bills. If he dropped some a Jay cutlers passes, he wouldn't touch an Arod laser beam. I wouldn't want to pay a guy $$ just to give us a few kick returns per game. Use one we already have or use an incoming draft pick that has decent hands and decent speed. Save the money, no need to waste it on a aging one dimensional ex-bear.

He will be almost 30 next season, if he hasnt been a productive WR yet I cant imagine it happening now.

I was really high on Franklin and hope he can comeback strong. Whether it's him or Harris doesn't really matter to me. Should be a pretty fun battle to watch in camp.

#1 Lacy ( big and tough, bruiser running)
#2 Harris ( short, nimble and fast and hard to see behind a OL )
#3 Franklin ( solid back up for the above two, just needs development)

He basically put it out there that he wants to play in warm weather near home which is Florida. Wouldn't be shocked If he ended up in Tampa , Miami, or Jacksonville. If him and smith are so close they probably will work out a deal soon.

This sums it up for me, although I'm not sure that Hester's declining return skills warrant a roster spot alone. If he were more serviceable as a WR then it would get me more excited. Even the veteran minimum might be overpaying him due to the loss of a roster spot.

That's the problem...he's not serviceable as a WR. Chicago gave him an honest shot to earn a spot but he just doesn't have it.
