I was recently reading up on all the free agents that just became available with the recent lifting of the lockout, and I got to thinking Sproles will probably be looking to get out of San Diego knowing they are not looking to start him anytime soon at least with the pick up of Ryan Matthews last year, so knowing this and with all the money we'd owe Grant if he decided to stay, what are everyone's thoughts on how releasing Grant and going after Sproles for a short term deal would effect us? I feel like Grant leaving would open up some cap space and get rid of an injury prone back. Sproles would also split time with Starks and be able to be a swing man out of the backfield and contribute in the kicking game. I've been a big fan of Grant while he's been with us, but this is just a move that I think could make us an even stronger offense. Please share your thoughts.

I don't think Sproles is the type of back that fits our zone blocking scheme. If you have seen Starks, he is a carbon copy of Grant. We will have a 2 backs sharing duties. Most teams are going to a 2 back strategy. Also, Grant is not injury prone it was a freak thing we had so many injuries last season!

No thanks to Sproles.

Ryan Grant was one of the NFC's best running backs before that injury, think he had two str8 1,200+ yard seasons.

They already have too many RBs. Ryan Grant, James Starks, Brandon Jackson, Alexander Green, Dimitri Nance, and John Kuhn. Since they're probably not keeping Jackson, their big thing will be developing a third-down back who can block and catch out of the backfield. I think Starks will fill that role well. Green will probably see limited action for the first half of the season. Kuhn is a short-yardage guy if he returns. Nance might not make the 53-man roster... I'm not sure what to think of him.

Randall Cobb will be the return specialist so Sproles isn't needed there. Don't forget it usually takes running backs about 8-10 weeks to learn the basics of the system. I'd rather keep Jackson.

I dont think Sproles really brings anything new to the packers and the chances of TT changing the way he builds his team as slim to none. I would say chances are the packers dont bring anyone in besides his usual slough of undrafted free agents

Don't think Sproles would work on our team. From everything I have read it sounds like TT is pretty high on Alex Green as well. When TT uses a third round pick or higher on a guy, you know darn well he's not gonna go after that position in free agency. Plus with Starks and Grant, we don't need another RB.

TT will not sign any free agents from any other teams. With Starks, Grant and Green they are probably set. If he wanted a change of pace back he'd resign Brandon Jackson.

Nope, don't think Sproles would fit the Packers. I liked what he did when he played on the Chargers, but I think the defenses that are in the NFC North would not be a good match up against him.

Can TT sign FAs? The old CBA had the top 8 teams in the NFL could not sign any FAs. There was an exception to this that you may replace a position if they lost a player in FA. Is this still a part of the new CBA?

i could be wrong but i believe that was a last year only thing because of the uncapped year.
