Okay, I've confirmed yes discussions have happened - my direct source wouldn't say more, he essentially said yes, that information is known so he confirmed with me.

So who exactly is or was Asante Samuel in his time frame with the Chargers....it's a VERY MIXED BAG.

We all know his 2024 campaign was cut short with injury with what was originally reported as a shoulder injury...but then it has been learned he went through neck surgery in April. He is just 25 years old...and if he is a fully cleared corner now looking for a team, the gamble would be well worth it IMO BUT it has to be very much treaded lightly with - neck crap is never good.

However, let's look at him from a "prospect" perspective.

- He does not have the typical height/length you want to see in an outside corner standing just 5'10' and only 30inch arms.
- He also isn't a crazy elite athlete overall...RAS of just 7.46 has him tick below that level. He is speedy though, 10 yard split of 1.5 is elite and his forty time of 4.41 is nothing to slouch at.
- While his body type many argued would cause a move inside, he was an outside corner and stayed such for the Chargers...seeing nearly all his snaps outside over the four years (92.5% of them).
- His second and third year he did phenomenal in coverage.
- He isn't a big hitting type tackler...and who knows post-injury now as well.

It has been known that Samuel was eyeing an early October medical check up and scan in hopes of being good to go....

Do I LOVE the thought of him....eh, not really but I also wouldn't say no. If you get his second and third year level play, it is an upgrade.

I have to think it's worth a gamble at this point. He's not a good tackler but if his medicals come back clean I think it's worth giving it a spin...

Speaking of potential "deals," I saw this article written by someone who thought flip flopping 5th & 7th round picks with the Cardinals would be a good deal for the Packers, giving them Doubs. In other words, giving up what was a 4th round pick for two really weak picks when he's one of the few receivers on the team that really has a handle on how to do their job.

I think people were fooled by the extension for Watson. Actually that extension puts the Packers in a position where he is tradeable. It might make sense to consider him as an option being sent packing instead of Doubs. It's hard to say, but there's also other options to trade in the WR room as well and worthy of that 5th round pick easily.

Some of the stories that are written are mind boggling.

I wouldn't do that with Reed out right now personally and Watson still unknown return.

Yes, I never brought it up, but the Watson extension does 100% allow for him to prove himself in short term now AND would make him vastly more attractive of trade bait for a team to have seen him healthy, assume he would be even better next year and for cheap for a tryout year essentially.

I doubt the Packers will go for him. After Jaire they will be gun shy on CBs or Safeties who see the doctor regularly. If they did it would be late in the season due to a serious injury to someone.

I brought Samuels up 3-4 weeks ago
To be fair he was in many of the pre season discussions of free agents and the sort - however back before draft when many of us mentioned him did so with the caveat of medical clearance…and that was without knowledge of this neck surgery then the month of the draft.

His tackling is terrible and medical…two big hurdles for GB to look past which they struggle typically with signing just one of those types.

I’d embrace it but with tempered excitement for sure.

I’d embrace a trade for a Greg Newsome or similar type if a team with a starting outside corner in last year of contract starts struggling and is likely out of playoff discussions and might bite

I still think it would be wise to pick up a perimeter CB before deadline.

Asante Jr would be ideal because he’d be a low cost option at attaining an upgrade. He’s not costing a Draft pick nor is his prorated more than a couple $Mil$

At vet minimum, game to game paycheck, I'd have no problem with it. As long as the deal is signed so he gets an entire week of practice with the team before our next game.

I’m guessing it’s gonna take a little more than minimum. Dude was a straight up sure fire starting corner (albeit not an all pro)

Won’t take a ton more but I honestly bet he gets a one year in the $2-$3 million type deal where like $250k-$500k is guaranteed

I've heard here that he never could tackle and sounds like a very real injury risk. I think I'd pass. I think Nixon can play tighter and Valentine can play better. Maybe Hobbs shouldn't be playing yet.

Hard pass on Samuel for me. His tackling is very suspect. With his neck issues, all you get is another JA with him. "Can he play, should he play, will he play?"

Someone needs to shut this "sources" internet service down, permanently. There needs to be a way to make posters like this pay $$ for their BS, since money seems to be the only thing that they understand.

Medical testing would be prolific I'd assume with him - our team knew exactly what Jaire had grown to be which is why he isn't here any longer. I will say it sounds like the medical discussions are already underway - I'd assume we will know within 72 hours if he's coming to GB from what I'm feeling out.

Well, keep an eye on TWSN "Sports", they seem to know everything. ;)

I wouldn't balk at him getting $2 mill plus more with incentives to be honest. If we intend making a run at a championship you need to have depth in key positions and our CB room is one of them that needs to be shored up.

Supposedly Lions are considering signing Samuels since they're down a couple of CB's. He hasn't been medically cleared, yet (CT scan sometime this month), so won't be available for a few weeks minimum.

Pass... we need CB's who can tackle as well as cover.

Too bad on him signing with the Steelers, I thought he might have a chance to improve our secondary and probably once he was up to speed, be an instant starter in an injury and talent depleted CB's room.

While we may never know why he chose the Steelers over the Packers, it could also be that the Packers decided to pass on him.

Not easy to find a higher caliber CB after the trade deadline, but I guess in Nixon and Valentine we trust and hey, there's always Bo Melton.
