Nice find, thanks for the link.

Matthews didn't fill out body wise until late. But with his heritage and hard work I don't think many of us wondered why when we took him in the 1st round.

Capers dons't work a lot at getting him free from double mans but that may change this week.

Once he got defensive snaps, the mission was to become great. By the time he finished his college career, he was good -- first-round-draft-pick good. Still, there was uncertainty as to whether he was a full-time outside linebacker or a valued pass-rushing specialist. He also was dogged by suspicion that his significant growth (Matthews currently is listed at 6-foot-3, 255 pounds after coming to college at about 200 pounds) during his time at USC wasn't all natural, even though he never tested positive for performance enhancers.

Really? It doesn't sound like a huge stretch given the weight gain people at strenght positions play. With that said, he did play at USC under Pete Carroll so he could be some sort of Terminator cyborg with anabolic steroids running through his veins instead of blood. ;)

Steeler fans have a lot of nerve talking about steroids, considering most of their past greats are all dying fairly young from all the steroids they used back in the 70s. You know, when ya all won all those Super Bowls. :snack:

There is your reason why some of us get a bit hostile. Coming over here from the enemy camp and talking smack about our players is really not a good idea whether you were joking or not. Now is not the time to get cute.

But I digress, back to the thread. I'm very impressed with Clay, that's one of the reasons he's my favorite, well one of my faves, it's hard to pick from this team, I love them all so much. His story is inspiration itself, for all those guys out there who love the game and who have had people tell them they are too small to play. With hard work and determination, you can achieve your dreams. I couldn't be prouder as a fan to have him on the SB bound team. Sometimes, in a year such as this, it's not always the destination that pulls on your heart strings, it's the journey.

I dunno why people bang on him for Steroids. Not like his dad, grandfather and uncle are weaklings or something. Ever hear of good genes? And Clay said his weight when he first got to USC is commonly reported incorrect. Then watch his off season workout, and dedication. Very disrespectful to Clay to have that Steroid BS always brought up.

Black and Gold, you have good posts, and then you post some garbage above like that. Not cool.

I really didn't take any harm in the guy making a joke about steroids.

But then again, some Steelers fans took it personal when Packers fans made jokes about Big Ben, so...

Way to completely miss the sarcasm people. Do you think I'm seriously accusing him of being a cyborg on steroids? Sheesh.

Good point. We both are guilty of it. But still, what is said between Packer fans on a Packers forum is one thing. I wouldn't go over to a Steelers forum and start talking smack about Big Ben, because that would be disrespectful. I'm not going to disrespect many Packers fans by talking about it on here. I know it's kind of a double standard but I'm just saying there is an appropriate place to say things while trying to offend the least amount of people possible.

I dunno, us Packer fans are just as willing to defend our players as Steelers fans. Just a sign of love for our teams!

really dude? it's been 5-6 years since then, adding 55 lbs of muscle in that time frame isn't that big of a stretch, hell I've added 20 lbs of fat over the last 2 years....the dude works out pretty regularly and does MMA training, he doesn't need steroids to put on 55 lbs of muscle

Did you catch this? I completely agree.

It doesn't sound like a huge stretch given the weight gain people at strength positions play.

NFL players tend to lose a ton of weight when they retire simply due to diet change and a reduced level of exercise. There's some mention of it in Jason Peter's book Hero of the Underground: A Memoir.

I can easily see how the converse could be true in college, especially considering Matthew's work ethic and the high amount of calories consumed by players, usually with the intent to add mass.

Further, it's very difficult for a player to avoid testing positive for steroids in the NCAA, and is the reason I specifically said 'anabolic steroids' instead of 'performance enhancing drugs' or 'growth enhancing hormones', because it's possible that there is some new drug that allows athletes to test negative with the NCAA's year-round drug testing program, and I wanted to make it clear that it was a joke in case 'Terminator cyborg' wasn't clear enough.

Clear enough?

People, you're being oversensitive here I beleive.

The Steelers fan said that it wasn't a stretch that Matthews gained a lot of weight, and LIGHTLY JOKED about steroids.

He didn't ATTACK Matthews...

To put it bluntly he was doubted because he played at a certain level in college which is what scouts based him on. After he had 'assistance' I guess he suddenly picked up his play big time. You can't really knock on anyone for doubting him because all of their knowledge was based on past play, just be glad the Packers landed a great player.

There is a Russian saying, "In every joke there is a bit of truth!" that the person telling the joke believes it.
