Some interesting info from an old former Packer linebacker:

Paup confident Capers will elevate defense
Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Bryce Paup, who played 11 seasons in the NFL and one year under Dom Capers in Jacksonville, believes the Packers made the right choice in hiring Capers as their new defensive coordinator.

“He is a very thorough guy, knows what he’s talking about, a good quality person,” said Paup in describing Capers. “To me it was a very good hire. I’m expecting big things out of him and their defense in the future because he’s one of those guys, if it’s not right, he’s going to find a way to make it right.”

Paup was a four-time Pro Bowl linebacker who was named NFL defensive player of the year in 1995. He played five seasons in Green Bay (1990-’94), three years in Buffalo (’95-’97), two years in Jacksonville (’98-’99) and one year in Minnesota (2000).

Paup has extensive experience playing in the 3-4 defense, including one season with the Jaguars in 1999 when Capers was defensive coordinator.

Paup, who is the head football coach at Green Bay Southwest High School, predicted there would be some growing pains during the Packers’ change from the 4-3 to the 3-4 defense.

“Any time you switch defenses … the terminology is different,” Paup said. “It’s like speaking English and then going to French or Japanese. It’s different. It’s going to take ’em a while to figure it out. There’s always some element of awkwardness there at the beginning.

“By the end of the season, two-thirds to three-fourths of the way through the season, you’re going to see that defense start to blossom.”

Paup played in Green Bay when the Packers last used the 3-4 defense in the early 1990s. When Fritz Shurmur replaced Ray Rhodes as defensive coordinator in 1994, the Packers moved back to the 4-3 and have played it ever since.

sounds like he's being honest letting us know it won't be perfect right away. if the offense can have our back for the first half of the season then we should be pretty good
