The Brewers put a beating on Washington, scoring 16 runs, but they gave up 9 after the game was out of reach. Easton McGee, just called up from Nashville a few days ago and who had only 5 innings of MLB ball under his belt, came in in the bottom of the 8th with a 12-run lead and a 2.57 ERA. Murphy probably figured it was a great opportunity to get the kid some experience. And he got a whole bunch. He faced 8 batters in the 8th, but somehow did not give up any runs or hits. Going into the 9th, Milwaukee was still up 16-4, and the Nationals machine-gunned him - 5 runs off of 5 hits; Easton threw 47 pitches in those 2 innings. Not a single strikeout, and by the time the hailstorm was over, his 2.57 ERA had turned into 7.35 if my math is correct. I hope it didn't get into his head too deeply, but it had to be demoralizing. 47 pitches in 2 innings means he'll have several days to seek counseling or whatever. This dogfight between the Brewers and the Cubs is becoming more intense and more dramatic every day. The two clubs have the best records in MLB, but Chicago stays 1 game behind. Never before in the modern era (since 1901) has the best team in baseball had such a low winning percentage on August 1. Since June 1, Milwaukee has been white-hot, going 34-16 - a .680 winning percentage. If they'd been playing at that pace all season, they'd be 75-35 right now, and easily the favorites to win the Series. Gonna be a couple of exciting months coming up!
