This is probably the reality of players lower on the roster. They obviously have some talent, but it may not be enough, or not channeled enough, for them to actually end up with a win at the end of the day. A great man told me something about football one evening, at a gathering of football players and coaches. I've always remembered it. It's pretty much the story of everything we do in life. I believe it. I'm paraphrasing here because it's been a long time, and I can't remember the exact words. "You don't win every play on a football field. You lose a lot of them. That's why you play the game. To win more of them than you lose. As a player, your job is to win more of the individual plays than the guy across from you. The plays that move the ball down the field, and give you positive yardage, are those when the right combination of players on your team with their individual battle with the guy across from them to make it happen. If you go into a game thinking you can win every one of those battles, you're a fool. Nobody can. If you go in believing you can't win more than the guy across from you, you're also a fool, unless you have a plan in your mind, based on the hard work you do in practice, that tells you there are ways you can beat that guy over there often enough to help your team. If you can't find that inside yourself, tell the coach. They'll find someone else who will at least give it all they have to make that happen. At the end of the day, you'll know inside yourself how well you did. Will the positive plays you had exceed those where you were beaten. Did those positive plays happen because you were lucky, or did they come from the hard work you've put in practicing, and getting your body in condition to make those plays? Coaches can judge you based on film, but only to a degree. They can't tell how much heart you have to play the game. That is something you find inside yourself. Even if you're down so far that you can't possibly win, you need to reach inside, and bring out the best you have on the next play." I think he summed up the game of football very well. It's why I learned to cut myself slack at things I do, and why I'm not ready to throw someone under the bus for making a mistake. When they learn from that mistake, and step up to handle the next challenge properly, that has to matter.
