Under previous NFL collective bargaining rules, a player placed on the injured reserved list could not return at any point that season.

That is not the case anymore. Wednesday Green Bay announced that running back Cedric Benson has been placed on injured reserve but with the opportunity to play again this season after eight weeks. Benson injured his left foot in Sunday's loss to Indianapolis. The type of injured Benson suffered is termed medically as a "Lisfranc injury".

Benson will miss six weeks of practice and then could return to game action in eight weeks. He'll be eligible to return Week 14 against Detroit.

If the first five weeks of the season are any indication, expect to see Alex Green over James Starks as the starter. It's been all Benson-but Green has at least seen some action, with Starks and Brandon Saine watching from the sidelines. The Packers could also sign a running back with the roster spot.

Benson will be DONE FOR THE YEAR. He will be placed on IR soon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Panthers have announced that Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil is out for the season after suffering a left foot injury.
Kalil was injured in Carolina's 16-12 loss to Seattle, although he continued playing.
Kalil went to see Dr. James Anderson on Tuesday and it was determined he had a Lisfranc injury, having torn a ligament that supports the middle of his foot.
He will have season-ending surgery on Monday and be placed on injured reserve.
