[QUOTE="Voyageur, post: 1098421, member: 17953"] In some cases, in-state recruiting means nothing. In other ways it does. Where the state of Wisconsin excelled in producing solid college level players was mainly for the offensive line. We got the majority of the top OL players to become Badgers. Second, we got a lot of pretty good RBs out of Wisconsin, but mostly the offensive linemen. If one was to believe that doesn't matter, they might want to visit how many Wisconsin born and bred players have made it from Madison into the NFL as offensive linemen. We might also look at the RBs who have run through Madison and made it in the NFL. The fact is, those two areas have produced some quality players, and there's a smattering of defensive linemen and linebackers as well. The reality is, you need to get as much home-grown talent as you can that's going to produce because it plays well with the fan base, and the people who are backing them with quite a bit of NIL money. Agree or not, prior to Fickell coming to Madison, the offensive lines were darned good, and they were manned by a lot of kids from Wisconsin. Since Fickell has dismissed them as not important, our offensive line has fallen apart and quickly, because there aren't any big farm kids in the wings to step up and be next in line. I agree that money talks, but in all honesty, when you get into the trenches, only a handful of offensive linemen are blue chippers in the entire US, and they end up buying into programs like Ohio State and Texas. As far as the Georgia-Alabama area, those kids stay at home and get a decent nest egg out of NIL. What Wisconsin has produced most in those who excel are young players who don't get national recognition because playing for a team like Waupaca, or Beaver Dam doesn't garner enough exposure. These were the kids that made it big as Badgers. Then there's the walk-ons, and there have been some good ones go through the Badger program. Jim Leonhard is just a prime example. A kid who wanted to play for the home team and proved he had the stuff. Fickell isn't even interested in discussing walk-on status with these kids. He thinks you need to recruit in the East and therein lies the biggest problem. He talked about recruiting in a 300 mile radius, but he never said it was outside that radius and that's what they do for the most part. Anyhow, that's what I'm seeing in Madison at this time.
