For all the readers, what do you suggest we do to improve the Packers pass rush? KGB has been alright, but everyone else excluding Truluk, Jenkins, and Montgomery have been autrocious. Before you say anything about Hunt of Jackson, know that Hunt takes plays off, and Jackson is old, big (alright, really really big), and disgruntaled. And if we send other players, if just doesn't seem to help, since none of the 5th, 6th, etc. players we send seem to shed blockers. This causes more vulnerable coverage, which hurts the Pack even more. So, the question is: ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE PASS RUSH?

Me personally, Firstly I would try switching Poppinga to DE.

If that doesn't work, look for wavier wire. Perhaps try swinging a trade for Taylor (not our future #1) since Miami has a whole lot of DE's (since they signed a couple this offseason) and are in a 3-4 system that might not suit Taylor.

WWYD? Translation, What Would You Do?

Hey. Jenkins and KGB got a pretty good push against the patriots, which has one of the better offensive lines. there were some sacks. KGb isnt good at rush defense, but a good pass rusher. Jenkins is money...and he got pretty good push up front. Dont know if anyone else saw this.

the Taylor trade has some minor trade legitimacy a while back, but I'm willing to bet it's dead by now.

The pass rush isn't the only concern...they need productive big men in the middle of the line so that the LBs aren't getting eaten up by the oline every play. The DEs would be servicable enough to get through this season if the pack could just get something out of the DTs...which hopefully will be solved by Hunt and Grady

I hope so musccy, but in all probability, Jackson and Hunt will be idiots come this season because they think that the Pack need them to win. Perhaps we can look for the wavier wire and pick out a Jackson type player this year, as we did a couple of years ago with Grady? That would be great! Here's hoping! :cross:

One way is to have a good enough run defense that the opponents' become one dimension. Against a great offense like Indy, that doesn't make a difference. But against most teams, we should be able to get good pressure if they are facing a third and long constantly.

Not a bad idea billv. Hopefully, Bates can improve the angles that the players take, to better improve their chances.

Get better players. I'm not being a smart ***, I am serious. It looks like Corey Simon may be available and that would be a very smart move.
You can come up with all kinds of schemes and rotations but the truth is they do not have the talant.

The problem isn't our pass rush. You just listed off 4 players who are doing a good job rushing right now, why would you want to switch our LB depth to DE??

Our main problem on the DL is not rushing the passer, it's stopping the run!!! We need our DTs to take up blockers better to free up the LBs and we need our DEs to contain runners to the inside.

Bates' defensive scheme is to funnel runners to the inside while DTs take up blockers for the LBs to make plays. Right now runners are usually stopped at the point of attack, but the cut-back is wide open. This leaves huge holes for big gains.

If we can fix the problems in our run defense, then we can leave our safeties back in deep coverage. The better pass coverage means that our pressure on the QB will be just fine. But if our run defense stays this bad, then the safeties need to stay up to help out, leaving our CBs alone to get picked apart.

With the way Jim Bates has been circling these guys around to test strengths & weaknesses... I'm still working to memorize all of their names...

I agree about Montgomery.. He'll work out just fine, pending injuries!
KGB, I think, will prosper in the Bates system...
As will Kampman and Cole, along with Tru-Luck - they are made for that type of football.

James Lee is still a work in progress and may not make the final cut.
My thinking is Manning will make the cut...
If Jackson doesn't get his act together - then Colin Cole becomes the NT Starter shortly after the Detroit opener. I think Cole is a diamond in the rough and has a Gilbert Brown type attitude.

On the others? Barnett has already made the cut, as has Collins.
The Cornerbacks and Safety's are the issue to me...

Remember, on the line of scrimmage, our Defense prospered quite nicely against Buffalo - which then gave Belicheck film to watch before he showed up.. Had we played the Patriots first... it may have actually turned out just a bit differently....

I like the pre-season for one thing.. and that's to see how well the Rookies aclimate to the NFL from the College ranks.... So much is said about which College kids will have what it takes to make it - just look at Maurice Clarett... A third round pick by Shanahan which went bust... BIG time... At least Sherman has found a way to get BJ Sander the tools he needed to make the grade.. What's Shanahan gonna do now... if you're a Broncos fan... are you calling for his head right about now?

I have some studyin' to do about the next cuts made from 65 - 53 man roster.
    Be back shortly....

Better our pass rush....perhaps we issue stun guns to our starting DL. Imagine the rush it would generate if they don't trip over the opponents twitching bodies lying prone on the turf!

    Just a suggestion, man!

    1) Draft a DT with your #1 pick not a .......

    2) Trade an offensive player for a defensive lineman.

    3) Trade draft pick(s)

    4) Any combination of the above. It all depends on how desperate the team is.

The desperation level is now at its high point in 2005.

Will the level of desperation go higher?

Signing Simon would be great, if it doesn't jeperdize signing key free agents next year, remember we have a lot next year.

I believe Jackson and Hunt will help, hopefully enough to be adequate. We may be able to get some help when the last cuts are being made also.

Simon would be a waste. Word out of Philly is that he's a very lazy player who only shows up every once in awhile. Stats seem to play this out since his numbers from last year were similar to Hunt's.

We've already got Hunt, no need to add a clone.

Maybe we should get Simon and play him next to Hunt and then we would have "the twins"! Just kidding.

I think a whole new D line exept for KGB, it will give our line backers better chances to get in and plug the run.

Hate to say it, but you're right Phil. It's just too bad they can't play the Bears 16 times a season instead of twice. Seems like they always get to the Bears QB!!!

ago, a new D-Line at this point in the season is just not possible. But don't be surprised to see three new starters on the D next season, with Kampman and Jackson FA's, and Hunt possibly being cut.

Phil, it was hilarious to watch Quinn Medicine Woman play QB. I'm suprised the Bears even won a game with him at the helm. But more importantly, I'm pissed that the Bears got Hillenmyer from our PS. He turned out to be a good LB who put up solid #'s. And boy it would've been nice to have a natural MLB, rather than Barnett (who has done an excellent job) who was switched to MLB. If I were the Bears, I would consider a 3-4 D.

yeah this about defines my opinion...we have an amazing pass rush specialist on the right side...however thats where the smiles end...

no real good pocket collapser from the interior line...grady, at his best, is strong as an ox, but he is slow and a non factor on passing downs, usually because he's tired...cleditus hunt if he shows up can be effective, but don't count on it...cullen jenkins, kenny peterson, donnell washington have yet to show me anything

on the end opposite KGB, which in my opinoin is quintessential in this pass rush, a viable threat from that side would free up KGB from being quintuple-teamed...Kampman would be a great #3 DE, i'd like to have a pass rusher to spell Kampman on 3rd downs and have Kampman spell KGB on 1st and rushing downs...like I said, Justin Tuck with either of our second rounders would've helped this need...Poppinga has the desired speed, but is all of 250 lbs.

Poppinga has potential coming off the edge, a Peter Boulware type if Brady has flashes of good play, but I don't see any drastic change

you know what would make our pass rush seem better, a defensive backfield that covers, so QB's have to hold onto the ball for more than two seconds...I hope this improves this year...

however i'll give bates the benefit of the doubt that his blitz packages will not suck as badly as slowik's

I know it doesn't look very good so far, but I'm still holding final judgement until our first string D is together for a while. Still hoping they will be adequate.

Traxx, its a good thing you aren't the GM of the Pack. :p But I would like to see how Jackson and Hunt do now they are able to play (or steal money for doing ****... which ever one makes you happy  ) Maybe Hunt and Jackson will step it up this year, and Jackson will forget about his contract dispute, and Hunt will realise the Pack paid him the huge contract for something other than being lazy. Probbably not, but a person can always hope.... er dream? :|
