Nearly half of the contributions were to Brown County groups. They were given out during a luncheon at the Lambeau Field Atrium, 1265 Lombardi Ave., Green Bay.
"I think giving back is crucial; it's part of our structure," Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said following a 30-minute presentation. "We're community owned, so to the extent that we can give back and do for this community, we do everything we can."
Nearly 100 people in attendance posed with the Vince Lombardi Trophy, expressing excitement over the Packers' 13th NFL championship in a win at Super Bowl XLV.
The foundation received 194 applications for assistance. The selected groups focus on fitness, arts, homelessness and the military, among other services. The foundation has awarded more than $2.2 million since it was established in 1986.
The $5,000 grant to Howe Elementary School will support a mentor and tutor program, said Toni Loch, executive director of the Howe Neighborhood Family Resource Center in Green Bay. The school has a 95 percent poverty rate, and some students are up to three years behind in reading.
"We're very thankful for being one of the worthwhile organizations supported," she said.
In the past year, the Packers also donated $15,000 through a scholarship program and nearly $60,000 on behalf of the National Football League Charities.
Last year, the foundation donated $176,534 to 62 groups.
