Opening Disclaimer: I did some cursory searches for the previous threads I know are out there but came up empty.
I'm pretty close to my 53 man projection...let's see how many open slots I have left:
Offense (24):
QB (3): You know who they are. It's too late to bring in a project for the PS; Tolzien is not PS eligible and serves as the development guy (for now); Flynn is the gamer who gets first shot if Rodgers goes down. A 53rd. roster spot is a small price to pay for the insurance of a 3rd. QB who knows the system.
TB (3): Lacy, Shields, Harris
FB (1): Kuhn
TE (4): R, Q, B & Taylor
OL (8): Everybody knows the starting 5. Backups are Sherrod for both OT positions, Linsley at C and Taylor for both G positions. That's some questionable depth.
WR (5): Everybody knows the 3 incumbents and the 2nd. round pick. I have White at #5.
Defense (24):
D-Line (5): Daniels, D. Jones, Boyd, Pennel, Thornton
Peppers is under OLB though he has, and will continue to, put his hand in the dirt on occasion; Neal is under OLB but may get some snaps at nickel 3-tech in rotation (though he seems small for the job).
ILB (4): Hawk, Jones, Barrington, Lattimore
Barrington's look very much in control and assignment-sure; showed a nice blitz move too. I'm not crazy about Lattimore at all, but they thought enough of him to pay him $1.5 mil; maybe it is all about the stirring Dallas halftime speech. I wish there was a tape of that floating around.
OLB (6): Matthews, Peppers, Neal, Perry, Mulumba, Elliot
I have some reservations about these last 2 but they seem to have the most potential upside.
DB (9): Shields (cover corner), Williams (cover and slot), House (cover corner), Hawyard (nickel back, maybe some cover), Burnett (safety), Richardson (strong safety; look for some 3-safety dimes like last year), Hyde (safety, nickel back, dime back, multi-tool), Dix (safety, more or less...a box safety playing the slot vs. a nickel or dime back is often a distinction without a difference), Bush (multi-tool last resort).
Special Teams (3):
The three kicking specialist incumbents.
KO return duty should go to Harris. I would have thought punt returns would go to Hyde, but they've been running Cobb out there again of late...one or the other.
So...that's 51 names.
A 52nd. would be either Guion if he's able, or one of the rookie DTs if Guion goes to PUP. If one is to count on Guion coming back and holding a roster spot at some point, the temporary fill in needs to be somebody who can be dispensed with at little cost...a rookie who can be moved to the PS would make sense. That 6th. DT probably wouldn't make the game day roster, barring another injury.
For the 53rd. spot, maybe Rolle or Janis. Maybe Raijon Neal, who looked impressive before getting injured. Maybe they still think enough of Bradford or one of the other WRs or LBs to want to keep him around. It might just come down to who they think they can squeeze onto the PS vs. who they think might get away.
