Another share of stock is the only Christmas present I have asked for. Worthless??? How much pleasure can you get from looking up at your stock certificate hanging on the wall 365 days a year?

I think buying Packer stock is similar to putting money into a casino machine. First of all, I don't like to play the machines because I work hard for my money and I don't enjoy the act enough to make it worth the risk of losing money. On the flip side, some people actually enjoy the rush of gambling in which case, the loss of money can be justified as it provides entertainment for them.
I will buy stock because I enjoy the game of football and feel it's worth the money that I work hard for. It provides me with pleasure and entertainment and therefore, I don't mind spending the money on it. My enjoyment is the return on my investment.
As far the the benefit, profits to the casino go to benefit the indian tribe and their lively hood, schools, the tribes expenses in roads, etc. (I think that's where it goes)
Profits of the stock sale will benefit the Packers orginization which in turn will benefit the City of Green Bay & Brown County; create jobs and strengthen the local economy.
I'm buying stock to benefit the team I'm devoted to and to my Green Bay neighborhoods, kind of like dropping money in the Salvation Army bucket. When I look at my framed Packers stock, I'll smile and think to myself, "is that worth $250 to me? Hell, yes.". You see, anything can be justified.

He is kinda right, a Packer stock is not like a traditional stock... You will NOT profit.

But as a Packer fan I would gladly buy one to say I partly own the team. And I think it's the coolest thing ever and it's sad were the only team in the league that does this...

If you look at it like a traditional stock, then it isn't a good idea. The best analogy I heard is from the previous sale when it was pointed out that it is a one-time fee for a lifetime membership in an exclusive fan club. You get a few perks that aren't available to the most rabid non-owner. You also get all the self important feelings when the team does good and can rightfully regard the team as we and us. We are undefeated. The refs shafted us. Non-owners and all but a few (read owners, employees, and family) fans of every other professional team can not rightfully say that.

None of us will be making any money on this investment, and we all know it. It is the thrill of ownership with this stock, not the financial gain, that makes this one worth more than any other to a Packer fan.

Four points from someone not interested in buying stock:

    1. Everyone knows what they are getting into. Not only that, for what amounts to a piece of memorabilia, Packer fans buying stock know a heck of a lot more about what their money is going towards than any other piece of team memorabilia you can buy. All the money raised in the stock sale by agreement with the NFL must go towards stadium construction. $43 million raised means $43 million knocked off the principle of the loans the Packers will have to take out for the new seats, entrace tower and scoreboard. The very fact that the Packers are putting $143 million into the stadium shows they are committed to Lambeau Field as the long-term home of the Packers.

    2. The Green Bay Packers would not exist without this "scam" arrangement. This arrangement got them back into the league in 1923. It gave them the stability to survive 1927 and 1928 when the NFL axed the small market teams. It saved the franchise from financial disasters in the 30s and 50s. It kept Curly Lambeau from moving the team to Los Angeles, and any leadership from taking the "logical" step to fully move the team to Milwaukee. This arrangement still motivates Packers' brass to focus on the long term viability of the franchise, because there is no "get out of jail free" waiting in LA, Toronto or London. Don't you think the hardcore in Buffalo, Jacksonville, Oakland and San Diego would pay $250 to get this arrangement in their towns?

    3. Most "traditional" or "common" stock is a scam. It used to be that people primarily bought stock for the dividends. If you own a piece of a for-profit company, you ought to share in the profits, right? Slowly, more and more regular folks got into the stock market and bought stock for the potential appreciation of the stock. Now most publicly traded companies don't offer dividends, because people will line up to give them money to gamble on their future growth. That's kind of messed up.

    4. Don't buy stock if you can't afford it. Don't buy a jersey if you can't afford it, and don't buy tickets if you can't afford it. If you can afford it and want it, you don't have to justify it to anyone. Be sensible. This is just sports.

And let's not forget the Packers don't have an owner with deep pockets who can fund stadium upgrades. They are a publicly owned non-profit company. I give donations to other non-profit organizations not expecting anything in return. Why not give to one that personally provides me with such excellent entertainment? I think many Packer fans would gladly shell out donations to keep the team from falling into the hands of some megalomaniacal owner.
