Bates working to install bulk of defensive package
by Bill Scott
The Green Bay Packers resume minicamp workouts today, after having the weekend off. When the players leave camp on Thursday, new defensive coordinator Jim Bates hopes to have 80 to 85% of the defensive package installed.
How fast the players grasp that package is up to them, according to Bates. The Packers defense was one of the worst in the league last season and Bates was brought in from Miami to help turn that around. How drastic that turn-a-round will be remains to be seen.
The Packers won't have Darren Sharper back. He was released after refusing to take a paycut, then signed with the Vikings. Two of the teams top three draft picks were offensive players, which doesn't help either.
Up to this point, one of the teams starting defensive tackles, Cletidus Hunt has been a no show, and the teams other starting safety from a year ago, Mark Roman, suffered a right knee injury in Brett Favre's celebrity softball game on Sunday. Roman's injury status remains uncertain.

I think these reporters need to quit disparaging the Offensive Draft picks at this stage of the game.... As far as I'm concerned - this Defense "needs" to step up and prove themselves worthy of being Green Bay Packers... period, end of statement! - Screw what the pundits say - quit reading the press reports every day - ignore the public and focus on the job at hand - just "get it done".... It's what Reggie would be tellin' 'em!
