I think our expectations got the best of us regarding Burks. I believe Burks was a project with upside all along. IMO, he was expected to compete with Jake his rookie season. I believe they expected him to learn ILB under the tutelage of Pettine n Co over the course of 2018 as likely a backup, with potential to start later in the season if Jake went down. Jake unexpectedly went down early in August and then Burks dislocated his shoulder against Oakland. The GB presumed starter was out indefinitely and his backup was injured for the foreseeable future and they had no solid option next to Martinez. In comes the Pipkins/Morrison trade deal. Which essentially delegated Burks to ST. Burks led the squad in Tackles and I personally remember him forcing several fair catches that didn’t show on the stat sheet. Not to mention he pinned Miami inside the 20 yard line twice in one game. He adapted to a less than ideal situation but it’s true, he was clearly not prepared to be the starting ILB due mainly to injury and being ill prepared as far as overall lack of LB experience. He showed a few flashes of his athleticism against the Redskins and Adrian Peterson against the run, but much like Josh Jones learned, he found out that athleticism only goes so far in the defensive passing game at the NFL level. Another offseason program, preseason, more reps and starting uninjured should help immensely. I really see him as still as near rookie at ILB due to his lack of play at the position. But his potential to get better throughout the season is what you’d like to see. He did what was expected of him at ST, he didn’t complain, he led the squad in tackles and excelled at the limited role he was given. Burks had clearly earned the right to compete for a starting role opposite Martinez.
