Is there an update on Brenton Cox? I can't find anything about him. I really like his game.

This is a very good question! We almost seemingly hide status of certain injured players. I’m not sure if that some psychological or philosophical reasoning.
I do know it’s a groin and it must have been somewhat serious because we’re approaching 2 months next week. I thought he was season ending but I might have been reading old news as I now can’t find anything that shows that.
In addition we It’s possible that we might be practicing more prudence with these players because we’re so thick with Edge players and it would also require opening a Roster spot. Keep in mind we have Van Ness and Colin Oliver (5th RD pick) who should be returning also. There’s 3 guys that can play the position (although we’re been reducing Lukas inside also).

Brenton was playing lights out to close last season (like Starter level). I really like him also, I think his ceiling level is above Enagbare, who’s a very good rotational piece. If you get a moment go look at his finish on a game by game basis in 2024. He was one of our better Defenders when he was activated down the stretch.

While I would never accuse any NFL team of stashing players, I think it is done, especially with 3rd/4th stringers. I think if there was a sudden need for Cox or even Lloyd, we might see them being taken off of IR.

With teams being able to recall 8 players from IR during the regular season and 2 more during the playoffs, it really isn't a bad spot to protect guys that are "injured". Now I am just spit balling, and don't have IR rules memorized verbatim, but I imagine it is pretty easy to work around the requirements of being "injured". I also recognize the fact that maybe one or both guys are still injured, but if they aren't needed and more recovery times is beneficial to them and the Packers, than keep them on IR, as long as the NFL allows them to do so.

Cool Photo!!

No it’s not. But it’s gonna be in about 15-20 years! Although it might take me that long to grow that full beard. The gray is starting to come through nicely so I’m not far away. Yesterday at the park a young lady selling candy for a school event asked me “is that your Granddaughter?”
I said “no that’s MY 7yr old.. I got a late start but never underestimate God!”

Updating OP

Dante Barnett DL - will take our IPP spot
Tyron Herring CB - comes back to GB on the PS
Ben Sims TE released
Jacob Monk iOL - activated off of PUP
Thanks Ty. I'm glad to see Monk is closer to getting on the field. If Barrett is our new IPP guy, what happened to the kicker?

I agree, this really isn't a very good CB room. Imagine had we not traded for Parsons and our pass rush was nonexistent. It really puts Hafley in a Catch-22. If he gives the CB help in coverage with LB's, and the front 4 doesn't get home, average QB's, given enough time, will find an open receiver. On the flip side, if he rushes 5-7 guys, it can allow the QB to kill you with a thousand cuts via quick short passes.

If the Packers had 2 above average CB's, this defense might be one of the best that they have had in a long time. They don't, so Hafley is just going to have to keep the Offense guessing and hope to god the CB's improve and the front 7 can keep getting pressure on the QB.

Normally, I don't get all that excited about or even behind mid-season trades, but this is a case when if the Packers could land a solid CB in a trade, I would be over the moon excited.
Well said Poker. This D would be in a world of hurt without Parsons - that's how weak these CBs are.

Seems QBs have been going the "death by a thousand cuts" and getting the ball out fast. It seems to me this would favor a shift to press from zone, no? Chip the receivers at the LOS and knock them a half second off a pure timing route.

Or provide safety cover and have CBs jump routes. There may not be enough time. (Love himself was getting out passes under 2 seconds, and Joe Flacco was well under 3.) Just hard to defend without giving up a 5 or 6 man rush, as you note.

Good thing that the Packers worked out 2 CB's and a TE today.

Nate Hobbs is predicted to miss time eith a Grade 1 MCL sprain, suffered in yesterday's game.

Wow. That game was like a curse. Gute has to find an answer at CB imo.

I heard Gute says “I don’t know if either CB will work out” when asked about these current CB options. Then suddenly both CB’s showed uninvited and worked out. It sure Put that concern to shame! :whistling:

Then.. there was an mis understanding that the Packers had worked out these CB’s. Both CB’s thought they had worked out themselves.

It’s a dire situation right now at CB let me tell ya!

I know many won't agree with me but I would like to see Hopper in at middle lb. He hits twice as hard as QW as watching him on special teams and preseason. I don't think rb's would be running through the line like what happened with QW.. QW was a high draft pick but I just don't see him as a top mlb.
Huge loss of Kraft, hope he'll be ready at start of next yr. Last 9 games will tell the story for MLF.

Hopper is not as versatile, YET and I still when he is out there see a guy processing more than fluidly reacting. Yes, he hits hard, but the game slows down for guys at various levels...I do feel Hopper is progressing nicely.

Rasul Douglas trade or a Asante Samuel Jr signing (IF healthy) are two headlines I really would like to see announced right now....

I don't know how good of a season Rasul is having in Miami, but I am still perplexed as to why Gute didn't sign him near the end of August when he was still a FA. The Dolphins signed him for $3M, that is chump change for a guy that can still play as a starting CB.

If Samuels is cleared to play, it would be a no brainer signing right now for the Packers. The CB group was bad with Hobbs, with him out for awhile, it is even worse.

Hell, I would bring both guys to Green Bay if I could.

Get busy Gute!

I actually think secondary play has been a lot better when Hobbs isn't out there. First two games of the seasona and the last two are clearly best outside CB games on the season IMO.

I like Valentine, I am not a Nixon fan. Nixon's play almost seems like it has been worse since the start of the season. Not to mention that it appears Doubs has now taken over punt return duties from him and doing a better job in the process.

With Hobbs going down, I felt we were thin before, now we are in a dangerous situation at CB. I would be absolutely dumbfounded if we don't see Gute make a trade today or at least sign a free agent CB after todays trade deadline.

I'll forever stand behind the only good Hobbs addition did was **** Bullard and Valentine off (not worth the signing). Hobbs is at his best in the slot, but we have that on lock if Bullard keeps progressing. I understand the gamble has to be taken sometimes but man...Hobbs is Gutes' first true miss on a legit FA addition guy. Yes, he could redeem himself easily as it is early in his time here but man...

Wondering what it would take (6th or 7th rounder) to get Zach Ertz from the Commanders. Sounds like at 3-6, they may be in sell mode and the Packers might be looking for Kraft's replacement. If they aren't comfortable with Musgrave getting the majority of the snaps, I have always loved Ertz's ability to stretch out the defense and the dude can catch the ball.

Okay since you brought up TE.....let's look at some of the bad teams and their options:

Jets have Jelani Woods and Jeremy Ruckert - both in the last year of their rookie deals. Jelani has barely played or done anything and would be cheapest, but Ruckert would be a better blocking option and with Taylor drafted neither of them is changing that position landscape for Jets...

Browns drafted Fannin Jr who looks excellent....Djoku is in his final year...would the Browns consider it?? Issue is just what would it take...

Titans...they did just draft Gunnar Helm but would they hear potentially moving Okonkwo...I doubt it he is a really good TE.

Raiders....Michael Mayer has this year and one more left...Bowers is their clear TE...would Raiders move Mayer??? That would be awesome if so but worry the equity sent would exceed what I would like...especially considering we already don't have a Day1 pick...

Saints Foster Moreau has been activated...but the team is in shambles and he is in final year. They have big money TE in Juwan Johnson....see if Foster is available?

Before we start talking about trading draft picks remember we don't have a first round pick for two years and losing even more is not a good idea considering the depth problems the Packers have at this time.

Weigh the players we will lose in free agency along with those they keep by offering substantial contracts, and we will have physical needs and a shortage of cap space to make it happen. The Packers need to find a few diamonds in the rough to make the DL and CB positions viable under Hafely. As far as getting someone like Ertz, that's a pick gone too and Ertz is not going to add enough to this season to make him a valuable commodity. Make it work with what you have and find a #3 who doesn't stumble over his own feet but can block and you've found as much as you can without selling out the future.

I put that in my write up of candidates IF someone wants to know TEs on the landcape above.

I’d like to see them promote Whyle into that TE3 spot. Here’s an under the radar guy who was drafted 3 spots behind Kraft, Musgrave and LaPorta as the #9 TE out of college in the 2023 draft. He basically Redshirted, but played 4 seasons at Cincinnati and started 3 of those seasons. He never logged less than 300 yards or 3 TD’s In his 3 seasons he logged a cumulative 1,000+ yards and 15 TD’s. Also he’s got 3 Offseason programs and he’s already established. In 28 NFL games as a Rookie and 2nd year player he has 37 receptions, 342 yards and 2 TD’s. What’s more important is he’s ascending, raising his shaky catch % to 75.7% last season in good samples.

This is a young man that I believe if given a chance could push Luke. I still think Luke has a higher ceiling and has advantage of being in our playbook longer, but Whyle is strong candidate at minimum for a TE3 spot. He’s a catch point enthusiast. He uses his size to effectively box out contested Defenders. Not great hands, but good hands, even with distractions he out physicals his matchup. He’s got the requisite size to be a Redzone threat. standing 6’6.4” he posted 4,69 40 time, but even quicker out of gate a 1.58 10 yard split, which is 95% tile.
Plus a 33.5” vertical. He’s a former high jumper and that Vertical to Height Metric is very hard to stop in the back of the Paint.
Unfortunately he was stuck behind Chig Okonkwo and 2025 selection #120.. Gunner Helm. He missed Roster cuts battle as their TE3 and was cut on Aug 26 and the Packers snatched him immediately. I believe he’s been primed for us by Cincinnati and can provide some nice support behind Luke.

In keeping with the current Badger-Fickell piling on.....if he played under Fickell, he's probably garbage. :roflmao:

While I admire your hope and optimism, I would be a lot more excited to see a #2 TE or even a #1 TE brought in that has a lot more NFL experience than Whyle has. The Packers lost a big piece on Sunday and expecting Musgrave and a couple of JAG's to replace Kraft shouldn't be the outlook of a playoff team, 9 weeks into a season.

I broke Whyle down in some other thread too, he has potential. I watched him closely in PS and his chances he's had, he is not going to push Luke IMO BUT has that potential if that makes sense. He is quite quick but is no where a violent block assistant like you'd hope and more or less his most effective form of blocking relies on technique or PURELY BEING IN THE WAY. He is however a fairly good pass protecting blocking when asked due to his athletic profile, but run game he is not moving anyone out of the way.

Route running I will say I feel he is better than Luke, while quick he isn't purely reliant on his athleticism to get him open and actually has better foot technique in and out of breaks.

Many might remember he was on my Top 5 TE watchlist prior to his final year in college and he just didn't do the growth I expected, not bad but I expected an explosion year.

While that would be great. We also could use a starting CB, and starting DT according to many fans. We just can’t go out signing 3 Starters and ignoring guys who are already in system. I really don’t think Luke is nearly as bad as some think. I’m not opposed to picking up a TE, but there’s cost associated with these moves. It would need to be the perfect scenario. Saying it so doesn’t make it so. Deals like this aren’t easy and often you wind up overpaying in capital and getting poor results.
Currently looking around now, not many teams are anxious to make us a Super Bowl Contender.
The only way for me it makes sense is if we go TE1. There’s going to come a substantial cost for a Bonafide TE1 in a thin option market, so just remember to kiss away any thought of shoring up any other position. In theory it all sounds good but we just don’t have resources to overspend imo. In these situations you have to explore guys on board before getting impatient. As far as trades? Well for a 6th or 7th you can get… Josh Whyle look alikes. Planning on parting with a 4th or maybe 3rd Rounder for any true upgrades.
