Well said Schulz and a good example of the folly of picking a "greatest rb in NFL history". Most of those arguments are emotional and subjective, and add little to a reasoned conversation of the pros and cons of each player.

Payton won a SB, and I don't think scored a TD in the game. That doesn't diminish his career, and he has a SB ring. And where do players from much earlier generations fit - like Jim Brown? We can wonder how a guy like Sanders would have played with a good team, but it's not worth the time.
Yes to Jim Brown.
104 yards/gm (Walter is nearest 99.8)
.9 TD per game (rushing only)
5.2 yards per carry
That’s just absolutely incredible.

In today’s world of 17 contests we’re 1,768 Rushing only
15TD’s TD Rushing

Jim Brown was an All Pro1 in
8 of 9 seasons.
AP1 (MVP 1)
AP1 (MVP 1)
AP1 (MVP 2)
AP1 (MVP 3)
AP1
PB (*18 All purpose TD;1,513 All Purpose Yards)
AP1
AP1 (MVP 2)
AP1 (MVP 1)

Brown also added in receiving
2,499 yards
9.5 per
20 TD’s
22.2 per game.

Only RB I saw beat him in Receiving was
“Sweetness” at 23.9 per game (9.2 per rec)
Edgerrin James 22.8 per game (6.8 per)

Brown in today’s math averaged across 9 seasons
1,947 All purpose
18 TD’s All Purpose

Only Payton Manning (5)
Aaron Rodgers (4)
Have more League MVP
Brown (3)
Brady (3)
Unitas (3)
Favre (3)

Jim Brown is the only NFL player to both start and finish league MVP

Off topic, just trying to publicize in a more exposed thread...
We have a Forum Fantasy Football league in need of some GM's. Low/medium competition, no cost or high pressure. Still have up to 9 spots available in this Yahoo-managed league.

Thanks @Pkrjones ..... I had to give up on Fantasies when Scarlett Johansson married Colin Jost.

All this talk about running backs, but nobody mentions Earl Campbell. Back in his best years, there was nothing like Earl Campbell on Monday Night Football, with the tearaway jerseys.

Poor guy gets around in a wheelchair much of the time, now... paying the price every day. I feel badly for the guy, but I sure am grateful for the excitement he created.

Dan Pastorini said Houston's playbook was simple. If Earl looked out of breath in the huddle, he'd ask him, "Are you tired?" If Campbell said "yeah", Pastorini'd say, "Ok, I'll just throw a couple then."

Check out how he destroys Jack Tatum at about the 3-minute mark.

My Hometown Man! He’s from Tyler, TX

Btw that Jack Tatum was one of the hardest hitting Defenders in NFL history. He crippled Stingley? As kids we used to sing “we Hatum.. he’s Jack Tatum.. he crippled a man for life”.

That’s the Raiders, Jack Tatum that hit him on the goal line. That’s a Bus hitting a Semi. You can see the power Jack inflicted even on Earl, but the Power Earl had in that low Center was too much.

Btw. His legs remind me of Quadzilla AJ Dillon. You can imagine what Dillon would’ve done to guys back then also.

I never liked that old coach with the cowboy hat after he said something to the effect that he'd run Earl Campbell into the ground. Which he did. An *** hole imo. Bo something?

Good catch and further illustrates why it's so hard to pick the best rb in NFL history. And the game and rules have evolved, making it even harder.

But clearly there is a top 10 that most would agree with. I really liked Gayle Sayers who ran like a fricking gazelle and made some dazzling moves. He reminds me of Sanders with his ability to cut so sharply, although Sayers was more fluid. Sanders was fluid but his moves were so sudden and his hips so loose it looked like he defied gravity.

Thanks for pointing out that collision with Tatum. Amazing.

I liked that commercial with Sanders. When asked to show his shoulder fake with the camera on him, he stared at the camera and then said, "you want to see it again."

Bum Phillips?

Didn't they call Earl the Tyler Rose?
Sounds familiar. We’re “Rose City” it would go in stride with that Nickname for sure
We have the Rose festival and are considered the Rose Capital of the World. We also host the Azalea Tours where an entire neighborhood of the City is in Bloom. So we’re into Flowers here.

PS. Sorry about a late response,
it comes from being a late bloomer :coffee:

Interesting read on ESPN.com,

2025 NFL positional group rankings: Best, worst team units

Per the author, Mike Clay: If you look at where GB is rated on each grouping and as a whole compared to the other NFC North teams (and the league) would make one believe or at least ponder that this GB team is #4 of 4 in their own division. MN, Det and CHI are ranked higher overall 5,6,8 or 9 while GB is 15. On a grouping basis some surprises (WR group ranked 17 and last in their own division with MN at 5, CHI at 7 and Det at 8). QB is ranked 15 with only Det higher. Their OL is ranked higher than I believe it to be. When reviewing the Bears rankings overall a surprise at how how highly their groupings are rated. What does that translate to in 2025-26, I dont know but it certainly brings up questions that fans of this team have and may be asking this year. Is GB actually the best team in the Div? Are they actually positioned to not just get into the playoffs but make a run? Very interesting!

Preseason "Rankings" are about as accurate/inaccurate as Weather predictions 60 days out. While I don't know what the author of those rankings based their opinion on, I guarantee it wasn't on any actual 2025 stats. Nor was it probably based very highly on development, which yes, is opinion and projection as well.

This is why they play all 17 games.

Yes and I’m assuming this includes the room including QB2, that’s Love-Malik?

Where are they ranking Malik? Last ? Are they weighing against W-L records 21-16 etc?

I would think if anything Malik is average rated at QB2
He’s likely not going to drag our QB room down dramatically?

If a QB2 is #9 what’s the overall ranking? Isn’t that helpful? How many Top #10 QB’s also have a Top 10 QB2?

These are teams with a Top 10 QB1 AND Top 10 QB2
Marcus Mariota Washington
Jake Browning Bengals
Jimmy Garrapolo Rams

If anything Malik should increase our QB room score, not lower it.

Good analogy for preseason predictions. Hell the weather can't be predicted accurately for tomorrow. The reason these (sports) predictions exist is that fans just can't get enough info on their team, and other teams as well.

I admit I read all of this stuff. But like the outcome of PS games, don't put much stock into it. We're all just passing time until September.

My guess, and it is a guess, is that Willis will be traded before September. Or he may get traded to a team that loses its QB during the season.

For this to happen, another team has to see Willis as a starter. That's a small market.

Worst case is that the Packers have a reliable backup QB. That's good in a season with SB aspirations.

Agree.

Predictions and odds are also a key thing for Vegas and other gambling venues. Sports, especially the NFL, has grown every year in the amount of money made and lost gambling on predicting outcomes. Not just scores, but stats, methods of wins, coin flips, attendance, etc. You name something associated with an NFL game and people are probably betting on it.

So not only are pure fans clamoring for all these so called "expert" predictions, the predictions and odds help to grease the skids for the Gambling world.

Packers trade a 2027 6th round pick to the Eagles for OT Darian Kinnard.

I’m not a fan and wasn’t when he came out. Not hating it but don’t see it personally.

This however using 2027 picks does illustrate a mindset from a man (Gute) who loves picks that he is playing the “we will be getting comp picks in 2027” due to many guys leaving after this season…which could mean (COULD) that he is sitting on all of them and not going to move them….or we see a similar trade of a guy away for similar (Heath for a 2027 7th or something else type move).
