2023 Draft Talk

While a team can never have enough good corners, I also feel a team should try to focus on immediate needs first in the early rounds.

The Packers should definitely select a player a tier above others on their board even if it doesn't fill an immediate need. They need to factor position of need into a decision with prospects within the same tier though.

I’ve felt for a long time Clark is not used properly at NT.

Clark only lined up at nose tackle on 16.6% of his snaps last season.

All in all it’s starting to feel like fun to be a Packer fan again.

I truly don't understand any Packers fan thinking that way. In my opinion the last 30 years since Favre became the starter have all been fun. They might be in for some tough years starting with Rodgers not being around anymore.

You mean stay away from the schools that have had some of the most dominate teams in recent years and have produced a significant amount of high caliber NFL players. Stay away from the teams that are basically an NFL farm system? LOL Would you prefer we go back to Ted's PAC 12 school of thought and draft players from college teams that are far less likely to hit?
Imo, most are drafted earlier than they should be.
As far as drafting guys from schools out west, are you referring to the guys that have formed the core of our team? You know, guys like Rodgers, Adams, Jones, Bakhtiari, and Clark.
I haven't analyzed this closely, but I suspect that if you looked at the first and second team All-Pro players from each of the last five years, Alabama and Georgia would both be lesser represented than some of the non-celebrated schools. Just my perception.
I don't believe in drafting the helmet (except in the case of Iowa). I think Iowa players are coached differently and are very valuable professionals. I'd like the Packers to have 3 or 4 of those guys on the roster at all times.

You showed a lot of restraint in your reply. PAC 12? Yeah they only gave us Rodgers, unless you want to say he played at Butte Community College before GB. (That's just another of his grudges. Apparently he wasn't respected enough at Cal.)

Hey the SEC provides a LOT of talent to the NFL - and so do other schools. Here in GB you'd be excused for thinking that GA is our AAA club, but that's just not true. The list of players you provide are mostly All Pros, and all Pro Bowlers I think.

Maybe some of these GA guys haven't lived up to their billing yet. I think Wyatt and Walker will be Pro Bowlers, if not All Pro. On and there's that guy Rashan Gary. He's pretty good. But he played at MI so, you know, limited upside......

I don't believe in drafting by helmet either, but I do believe in drafting by conference. SEC has proved time and time time again that they produce more NFL ready players than pretty much any other conference besides maybe the Big 10. If you noticed there's a pattern in the players you listed, all but one are offensive players. Pac 12 definitely has produced offensive talent over the years, but if you want defense, you go to a conference like the SEC. We historically neglected that conference and our core defense definitely reflected it in the TT years. SEC has always been a tough, smash mouth conference with the best defenses and that's where you want to pluck from.

The conference or level of reps against are PIVOTAL in projecting guys. PIVOTAL. Can make a massive impact on how well you envision the prospect doing or being at the next level.

This was last years All Pro defense. Chris Jones, Quinnen Williams, Roquan Smith, Patrick Surtain II, and Minkah Fitzpatrick are all from the SEC. Micah Parsons and Nick Bosa are from the Big 10. That's 7 of 11 players out of either the SEC or Big 10.

And to take it a step further the remaining were from: USC, Boston College, BYU, Cincinnati. One historical powerhouse (USC)...leaving three "lessor schools" in lessor conferences.

Yeah I mean even the most complete college team couldn’t touch a pro team. GMs pick talent based on need, wherever the talent is. Do they always take the BPA? I kinda doubt it. Do some schools produce more NFL players. Sure.

Good point. Level of competition makes a big difference in how quickly a guy can produce in the NFL. Look at Adams, out of Fresno State. It took him three years to develop. Look at the WRs coming out of OSU. These guys seem ready day 1 partly because they play against solid opponents. (No Big 10 jokes please......)

It's still somewhat early but here soon can we unsticky last years selection threads when any mods get a chance? Before we know it we will have this year's.

Your perception isn't correct. ;)

At least not in the sense of what NCAA college football programs had the most players on NFL rosters in 2022. The "All-Pro" part, probably changes every year, but I would guess that the number of players shifts up and down, but the teams you see on this list, are always well represented.

Add on: Just did a quick check on Pro Bowlers, seems like The Buckeyes, at least in 2021 were the program that held that mark.

I don't have any numbers or data other than what you provided (thanks), but your number confirms what I expected - the SEC and OSU send a lot of players to the NFL.

Dantes, were these 1st and 2nd team all-pro for last 5 seasons? Or just the 1st team? What organization made the picks?

I didn't know about this guy, thanks. I like the MI guy, Jake Moody? Something like that. It's just time to move on from Crosby. His FG kicking is still solid, but he rarely puts a kickoff in the end zone.
That’s something I’d like to address.

Do you think Graham Gano, Nick Folk and Michael Badgley all be sent walking? They both had KO distance averages about the same or worse than Mason Crosby in last season.

I could see offering him less $$. but we could do a lot worse imo and Kickers cracking the top half of the league don’t just grow on trees.

IMO. If they think they have a team that will be competitive I can see sticking with Crosby. If they feel next seasons' priority is evaluating Love I could see grooming a new younger kicker of the future and saving a little money in the process. IMO.
