Seems to be a trend with MM. For years I don't remember him comparing different years but he's been on a tear lately.
At the end of last year he stated that the offense was the best of his time here. Seemed like a stretch considering how achingly bad the Packers were at converting red zone...
Histrionics aside, I think that's basically correct. There's a lot going on during end-game type scenarios and it's understandable that things get missed.
However, they still have the responsibility to get whatever help is necessary if they're going to be unable to do it on their own. If they...
It is truly baffling how often we see bad clock management. I totally understand that there's a lot of chaos happening at the end of halves and games, but if the coach can't manage it all he needs to get some help. No reason not to have an assistant coach up in the box who has responsibility...
I totally understand the distinction you are making, but there's a huge gap between hiding one's partner and declaring it to the press.
First, there's no reason to actually hide anything. If his partner hangs out with him after the game I'm sure most people would just assume it was a friend...
Not to mention that whenever anything bad happens to him (normal hazing, trash talk, benched, cut, victim of personal foul) some idiot writer(s) is going to get on his high horse and claim that it was because he was gay. He's put his future employer and teammates in a very bad position. I'm...
You think they played well against SF? You think they played well against Cincinnati? The rest of the first half of the schedule was against really bad offensive teams. The only exception might be Detroit, but without CJ that team is hopeless. The defense has always been able to play well...
I'm not sure everyone agrees with #2. I certainly don't. I didn't think they were going to mount a serious challenge this year and I felt the same way at the beginning of last year. Unless something dramatic happens I don't think I will see them as a legitimate Super Bowl contender at the...
In the Bears game it ended up not mattering when McCarthy called a timeout because the defense never could get off the field so the offense never got a chance, but a coach can't just assume that. He has to plan as though his defense can make a stop, and if they do make a stop, he'll be able to...
Agree 100%. It's easy to second guess play calls after they fail so I try not to do it, but ******** up game management is a different animal.
With the plethora of close games that the Packers had this year it was really apparent how terrible he is at it. His favorite is, when behind, to save...
I see quite a few coaches do that and it is just horrible. Maybe it makes sense if you've got a QB like Newton or Kaepernick where you can run a QB draw or something. Not the case with the Packers or most other teams that I see doing it.
So the question was whether there was HOF caliber quarterbacks that weren't on consistently contending teams and you list 4 scrubs that went to the Super Bowl. I'm thinking you misunderstood the question (or you believe those 4 are HOF quality).
Looks like you weren't alone though.
I like Ted Thompson, but the line of reasoning that he shouldn't be criticized since the Packers are perennially contenders is flawed. The Packers have an MVP/HOF caliber quarterback (due credit to TT for that, of course) and that's all it takes. Can you name a MVP/HOF QB in the past 20 years...
It's an interesting debate, because it's almost impossible to know for sure whether it's the players that are bad or the coaching is bad. It sounds like McCarthy has made up his mind, though, with his comments about the defense needing more playmakers.
TT's draft and develop strategy can...
